With the unsettled weather, May has been quiet this year on the migrant-front. At Marazion a Great White Egret stole the show during the first week but was surprisingly shy and elusive, keeping away from the main areas at the front of the marsh where disturbance from the kite-surfers on the predominantly southerly winds took place over several days.  A Marsh Harrier passed through on 12th and a Hobby was sighted 27th & 28th. After the driest April on record and the ongoing drought, our water levels are at their lowest ever but it doesn’t appear to have affected our breeding birds as broods of Mallard, Mute Swans, Moorhens and Grey Herons testify.

With news of the proposed move of the Penzance heliport to a field close to the estuary, we have been busy looking at the detail and with no Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) planned by BIH and plans to fly over the valley from Hayle to Marazion Marsh we have objected on both accounts. Watch this space.
