Although we have occasional reports of Otters being seen on the reserve, they are few and far between and usually only involve one or two individuals. Today, however, whilst driving past Longrock Pool I pulled over to see what looked like two animals swimming across the water and diving. Yesterday there had been a report of two otters here catching eels and crabs so I was not particularly surprised when these two turned out to be just that. However, I was surprised when a third joined them! I think this is the first time I have recorded three otters together here - and in broad daylight at 10:50am. With all the rain of late, the reserve is well-flooded. This includes the public footpath too I'm afraid, so if you are planning a visit please bring your wellies! The best viewing, however, is from the seafront pavement and now that we have finished the winter cutting programme with the amphibious Truxor reedcutter from Wales, there is a lot more open water for wildfowl - and the three Bitterns that we have had around the place for a month or so now. As always, patience is required to see these but the viewing bay from the pavement is still your best bet. Good birding and otter watching!
