The eagle eyed visitor to Marazion Marsh will have spotted that the Warden and volunteers started cutting reeds next to Longrock Pool yesterday.
We cut the reeds in a patchwork providing old and new reed for nature. This area was cut 5 years ago, since then the leaf litter has been building up preventing water from flooding this area and starting to dry out. To reverse this process we cut and remove the reeds but we also rake up the leaf litter to allow the water to flood the area providing fish and amphibians the perfect environment to thrive. By June the reeds will grow back providing cover for birds like reed and sedge warbler. Next winter the visiting bittern will find these flooded reed areas perfect foraging areas.
This year the RSPB has teamed up with a local historical roundhouse project in Gulval. The reeds will be bundled and transported to the village by the end of March.
