The number of waders around the reserve remains impressive at the moment including 4 greenshank, 2 wood sandpiper, 10 snipe and pectoral sandpiper all on Starnafin pools this morning.
In the past few days we’ve also had spotted redshank, little stint, ruff, curlew and dunlin on the pools and low ground.
A walk on the beach at Rattray last night saw a good selection of waders on the shoreline, typically I forgot to take my binoculars… but will definitely head down for another look in the next few days!
There have been regular sightings of marsh harriers, with at least four different birds on the reserve this week, including pale blue and yellow wing tagged birds. If you manage to spot any wing tags whilst you’re here let us know!
Also around this week peregrine, sparrowhawk, willow warbler and white throat from the centre and perhaps the most unusual sighting this week of a juvenile cuckoo. It was first spotted yesterday morning sat on one of the sluice bridges, then again this afternoon in the trees to the left of the centre and at the end of the woodland walk.
