It's been a quiet few days on the reserve, mostly because our off-road truck has been in the garage for its MOT so getting equipment out to the big projects on the reserve has been very difficult. The truck made it back just before we finished up this evening so in the next few days, the wardens will be able to get out to the marsh to finish work on the handling facility for the Koniks and do some work out in the plantation. In the meantime, we've all been catching up on a bit of office-work, planning our summer events and some new hide interpretation, taking some nice long walks out on the reserve, and the volunteers have been very busy indeed working on a new project in the woodland and wildlife garden... More on that one once it's nearer to being finished! We're resurfacing some of the paths in the Wildlife Garden at the moment, so it may not look quite at its best if you visit in the next week or so.
The weather has meant it's been fairly quiet on the bird front too, although we do have a new entry on the year list in the shape of a Glaucous Gull spotted by one of our visitors from Fen Hide. With two Garganey, ten Bearded Tit and a Green Winged Teal seen there on Sunday and otter still fairly regular, it seems to be one of the best spots on the reserve for wildlife watching at the moment. It is a little bit wet on the first half of the path though, so if yo'ure heading down there in the next few days it might be worth wearing wellies.
From the centre the Short-eared owl is still putting in a regular appearance and the small herd of Roe Deer have been out and about almost every day and Vicky and I had some really good views of a Sparrowhawk just along the entrance track as we headed out to fetch the truck this evening.
