A quick recent sightings blog this weekend as our volunteers have now all abandoned us (Iain has promised to come back after the weekend...) and we're all a bit busy preparing for Stargazing tonight and nestbox building tomorrow.
Bittern continue to be our best sighting of the week by far. We're pretty confident there are at least two hanging around Fen Hide. I'm not sure anyone has definitively seen two together but they're appearing far too often and in far too many places and from far too many directions for a single bird to manage! Otter have been quite reliable from Fen Hide too and there's still a chance of catching the small flock of Bearded Tit on a still day.
The best duck of the week was a single Scaup on the lagoon for WeBS on Monday morning, although we've also had fantastic views of Red-Breasted Merganser from the centre. A few additions to the year list this week, Glaucous Gull on Sunday, and Knot and the very elusive Treecreeper in the middle of the week. Goosander was briefly a new entry too, until we realised it was already on there and it had to be rubbed out.
Spot The Treecreeper...
The usual birds including Gadwall, Shelduck, Mute Swan, Great Spotted Woodpecker and Kestrel, are still around the centre, large flocks of Tree Sparrow, Goldfinch, Linnet and Corn Bunting remain on the arable fields between the centre and Tower Pool hide. there's over 100 Curlew on the fields and we're developing a huge flock of Common Gull out on the low ground. For mammal watchers we're still seeing Roe Deer, Fox and Badger fairly regularly and the ermine Stoat is still around, still ermine and usually somewhere between the centre and the wildlife garden.
