The area has been suffering a bit in the snow and ice, but the reserve is coping - being that bit nearer the coast has kept us just a fraction milder than other areas. With inland areas becoming covered in snow or frozen over, a lot of birds are fleeing to the coast, so we're seeing some big flocks of species like Yellowhammers, as well as getting a few scarcer visitors like Woodcock and Brambling.
You'll see the updates on what's been around on the recent sightings page, but please remember to let us know by posting on the forums here if you see anything on the reserve.
Last year was very impressive for variety and, for the first time ever, more than 200 species of birds were recorded on the reserve in a year - the final total was 205. Can we match it this year, maybe we can beat it?! So far, we've got off to a reasonable start, with over 80 species noted in the first three days. There should be a few more to come (Skylark as eluded us so far!) and perhaps the big wintering duck flocks may be hiding a rarity or two...
We'll keep you posted on what's around and the work that's going on - and remember to ask us if there's anything you want to know about the reserve or let us know if there's something you'd like to share with other visitors.
In the meanwhile, why not make it your resolution to get out and about a bit more - and come to visit us!
