As you will see from Darell's photographs in the Gallery we have had 4 common cranes at the reserve today.
They were spotted by visitors dropping in last night shortly before dusk, and quickly confirmed by a Kinnordy local (who was back at 6 am with his daughter!).
The birds have been very obliging, choosing to feed in the fields on the north side, or rest on the far side of the swamp lochan as a group. They did appear to think about heading off a couple of times, but maybe they could see more of the volcanic ash from the air than we could see on the ground, as they came back and showed us all how gracefully they can land with those long legs stretched out below them.
Obviously word spread quickly, and the reserve has been very busy today, but hopefully they will hang about a few more days so that those not fortunate enough to get out in the week might be able to catch a glimpse over the weekend. Volunteers will be in the hides at the weekend to help you see what's around, whether it be cranes, ospreys or the warblers which have recently returned from Africa. There are lots of male shoveler around the reserve at the moment, and a couple of shelduck. Pairs of bullfinch at various points along the path are a real treat to see too. Keep your eyes peeled to the right of the Gullery hide and you might catch a glimpse of the water rail.
