Springwatch is about to hit your TV screens again, but Loch of Kinnordy seems to have jumped the gun a little, and the excitement of the season has started already. I was delighted to get a text on Thursday night telling me that there were black headed gull chicks! The first to be seen since 2007 - I could hardly contain my excitement. Sure enough there are some fair sized fluffy bundles to be seen in the nests in front of the Gullery hide. There are around 100 nests (so far) so very soon there will hopefully be plenty young taking to the water making them even easier to see. As the first few have hatched there seem to be more pairs starting to nest, so lets hope it is a long and successful season for this species. If you can't make it to Kinnordy yourself, I'll keep you posted!
If you have youngsters of your own, and want to know more about Kinnordy, bring them along to the reserve next Sunday. We'll be running a variety of activities including minibeast hunt, pond dipping and bird watching of course. Details can be found on the events page.
Brilliant to hear that the Black-Headed Gulls have chicks! Fingers crossed that there are plenty more to come!
