Did you know that this month has been officially declared Organic September? http://www.soilassociation.org/organicseptember
It is the Soil Association's month long celebration of all things organic, and here at RSPB Loch Leven, we're delighted to join in!
From the beans in our coffee to the flour & butter in our scones, the lentils in our soup to the oil on our salads, and our range of snacks and soft drinks, we use organic ingredients in our cafe wherever possible. RSPB own brand 'Love Nature' fudge, chocolate, and even our new Christmas chocolate penguins are all organic too.
Why? Well, put simply, organic food is grown and farmed in a way that is kinder to nature and the environment. Organic farms reduce environmental pollution by restricting the use of chemical pesticides and fertilisers, so no nasty run offs into the soil. Organic farms are often havens for wildlife too, thriving with plant, insect and bird life.
With all that in mind, it makes sense for us to use organic ingredients! The RSPB is committed to saving wildlife, protecting our native species and helping our countryside to thrive, but we can't do it by ourselves. Our conservation work is vital, but so too is realising that we are one part of a bigger picture and if we all do a little, we can help a lot.
So if you're going to be meeting a friend over coffee & a scone, or fancy a warming bowl of soup after an autumn walk, then come here! Not only do the profits from the cafe go straight back into our conservation work, but now you'll know that that scone is actually doing good for wildlife too! Guilt free carrot cake? Now that has to be worth celebrating!
