What a beautiful day it has been, the sun is still shining over the whole of the reserve. And with this spring weather many of our spring birds are starting to arrive- the lesser and greater black backed gulls are beginning to arrive on St Serfs, though there are still many pink footed geese on the island. We have been watching a pied wagtail today which has been up very close at the cafe window, we think it was looking for nesting materials. There are also growing numbers of lapwing on the reserve making the lush green grass look even more stunning. On the loch the usual ducks were all present with large numbers of goldeneye and tufted ducks and two shellduck in the bay. When I was up the hill I got the best views I have ever had of a roe deer up there, with a single deer running down the hill slopes. This week I have seen my first bat and bumble bee of the year so it won't be long now until the reserve is buzzing with the joys of spring once more. This is a great time to visit the reserve, with our revamped cafe and shop now complete and all of the wonderful birds to match. There will unfortunately no blog next week as I will not be on the reserve, though I will be back blogging after that!
