The loch this morning was picture perfect, with blue skies above and a flat calm loch. The change of season has also brought with it thousands of pink footed geese, that were today feeding on the reserve and the adjacent fields. We now also have some whooper swans at loch Leven with six of them feeding in the bay throughout the day. Along with them were many greylag geese, plenty of great crested grebes, a variety of ducks (including shoveler, goldeneye, wigeon, mallard and tufted ducks) and a single ruff. On the flood there are plenty of ducks, greylag geese, a single canada goose, and a few curlew feeding on the muddy fringes. Towards the back of the flood two kestrels were on the ground trying to feed, presumably there wasn't enough wind to allow them to hover? Our feeders have been put back in action, and many birds have been using them throughout the day- including a stunning greater spotted woodpecker. A single blackcap was seen in the feeding area along with a couple more in the picnic area. The woodland close to the carpark was full of life today, with many tits, finches and a single golcrest feeding. What a great Saturday!
