The reserve is totally "jam packed" full of about 10,000 pink-footed geese along with a single greenland white-fronted goose that was seen this morning. The whole of the back of the reserve is black with geese and there are what looks like islands of geese dotted all over the loch. Huge numbers of whooper swans have gathered on the reserve and on the loch, two of which had yellow rings on, but were too far away to read. In Vane Bay there are strong numbers of duck; mostly wigeon, teal, pochard, tufted ducks and a few goldeneye. My favourie ducks, the pintail, are in small numbers today along with a rather large flock of gooseander that passed in front of St Serfs island. On the sandy bank in the bay there are plenty of lapwing and a small flock of curlew that arrived recently. The now common Kestrel has made regular apperances today along with a single buzzard which has been patrolling the area. On the feeders all the usual suspects were present along with a group of four tree sparrows and a single male lesser redpoll.
The white rumped sandpiper, seen earlier this week, was unfortunately not seen today but there are plenty of other birds to make up for it!!
With the huge numbers of geese here on the reserve the goose roost walk tomorrow morning is going to be AMAZING, if you are intersted check the events section of the site for more information!
