Weekly Chat, Sunday February 14, 2010

Oh my, another week.   How many rosettes did Tweed win at the agility contest? Check Patriciat's late post on last week's blog to find out!  Congratulations Tweed and Patriciat!

  • Couldn't get on the site yesterday and have already fouled up this am when my typing became so small I couldn't read it myself. Any ideas how that happened anyone ( what did I hit that I shouldn't have)

ANNETTE All those dolphins, lucky you, we think ourselves lucky if we see a dozen.

ALAN hope it is good news for Hamish. Dillon had 2 lumps removed 18 months ago. One turned out to be an aquiline duct carcenoma and we were told to be extra aware for 6 months after which he would be in the clear. That time has long passed.

HERON  loved your saying" mad as a bag of broken biscuits"

Signing of off now as I am going for a swim, Hopefully back later.

  • Hello everyone -

Tiger  GREAT pics - thanks for reminding me about the  Pale Male site.

Lots of large wet snow flakes falling here in Bristol currently - looks to be settling -  I'm sure Buzz would get a kick out of wet snow landing on his nose ! Lindybird

Alan   So relieved to hear Hamish is on the mend

Patriciat  very good to hear your sister is back home

Off to feed my good friend Brenda lunch shortly and hope I don't get snowed in whilst I'm there - the birds that visit my garden will moan like blazes if I do.

Yes, it was so good to see Osps on the nest on whatumacallit island isn't it !!

Hope you're back  soon Terry sympathy all round with your PC.

    34  14 and counting   :)

  • Morning Everyone. I had just written a very long post and lost it all ! Foggy start here this morning and is now raining.

Tiger, As you say, they are amazing pictures of New York. Thank you.

OG,  glad you doors are now fitted and you are happy with the results.

Alan, I hope you get good results from the vet  and that Hamish is a happy dog this morning.

Linda, lovely pics. of an active and very wet Buzz. He must keep you fit.

Gary, I couldn't send Rio home. His owners would have to come looking for him.

Margobird, I hope you are feeling  a little better today.

    Enjoy today.

  • Thanks for your 'enjoy today' Brenda.  Its the friendship of this site which keeps it going, & keeps me going, too!   Wish I could say Buzz keeps me fit, he is so active that a 'walk' has to be a good run around, off the lead, so its lucky that we have some fields nearby where he can run riot.  (Tries to catch the rabbits but wouldn't know what to do with one if he ever caught one).

Like Annette  & some others, I've been enjoying the Winter Olympics. (We get the highlights of the night before, on TV in the afternoons here, so are always catching up).  Great performances from the Ice Skating, did enjoy all that, & surprised myself by getting very involved with the Snow Boarding Races, such drama.

  • Morning all from TI,

Tiger : Amazing pictures of New York in the snow.

Hamish is fine this morning. He seemed to take it all in his stride yesterday and is back to his usual self. Just got to go easy on the walks for a few days and he is on antibiotics. Tomorrow he goes for a post operative check and we await the results from the lab.

The weather does not seem to get any better. We had thick fog this morning which is just starting to lift into low cloud. Also frosty with frozen birdbath. The cold weather seems relentless but there are signs of spring with snowdrops and now crocus flowering in the front garden.

The latest from the bald eagles is that the two harbours pair now have one egg.

    Weather : Overcast & Gloomy,dry , Temp -0.2c , Calm , Sunrise 07:10 , Sunset 17:18.

  • Hi Alan.  Glad to hear that Hamish is feeling OK.  As you don't mention it, perhaps he is not forced to wear one of those awful funnel collars;  they do hate them, don't they?

Not heard from Margobird yet today, so hope you are improving, Margobird.  How is the weather in Poole?

  • Cirrus:   Hope you find your friend is OK.  You are good, to keep helping her when she is not 100%,

dibnlib:  I know what you mean about strange things happening to your typing, I sometimes find I've hit something & my post has come out in just GINORMOUS capital letters, so I have to ditch it & start again. Have to be careful not to touch anything other than the keyboard keys, or I'm in trouble as I'm not 'Techie'.

  • Quiet on here today- perhaps some are still having difficulties getting 'in'.

Here is another in a short series of 'HOLIDAY COINCIDENCES' -

One of our first holidays abroad without children in tow (those of you with, will know what I mean) was a little treat of a week in Nerja, which is a holiday resort on the coast of mainland Spain.

We were to fly from Manchester Airport, but were told there was a delay in departure, as there was a technical problem.  To cut a very, very very long story short, after being told nothing  for a very long time, we were finally told that eventually a 'spare' plane would be found for our journey.  We left Manchester several hours late, and were told that we were going to land in Birmingham to pick up some other passengers! The plane we were in was a bit elderly and creaky, & some of our fellow more nervous passengers were actually relieved when we were told to disembark in Birmingham, as there was now another problem with the aircraft.  Hours of waiting followed, during which several passengers became abusive, banging fists on the desk etc., as we were told nothing much about what was to happen.  Eventually they told us that we would have to depart in the morning!  almost 22 hours after we had originally been expected to fly, & we could either accept a payment of £50 each & stay the night in the airport, or go to a hotel for a few hours at their expense.  Most of us did this, as there were several small children & some elderly passengers, too. This of course took some organising, & we were extremely tired & late when we fell into bed (without anything but our hand luggage) in a very luxurious hotel, but we only had 5 hours until we had to be at reception ready to leave once again....    We eventually landed in Spain, almost 1 and a half days late! Of course, it took us over 24 hours to recover from all the drama & tiredness, so our holiday quickly shrank to only about 4 days before we were packing to return home again.  We wrote about this in a stinging letter to the Airline, demanding compensation.

Fast forward to 2 years later.  We were staying in a pleasant resort in Tenerife, Canary Islands, & decided to follow the coastal road south & explore all the little bays & resorts in the car we'd hired for a couple of days. After looking at one rather depressing development in a bay where there had been a monster of a hotel built, we were walking back up the hill to the car park, when a couple stopped us & asked if we had been on the disastrous trip to Nerja!!  They had recognised us (although I admit, I did not remember them) & had been offered only a paltry sum after all the delays etc. They asked us what compensation we had had, & we had to admit that we had had a much larger sum, as we had complained bitterly to the Company:  a lesson there, perhaps,  to Brits who do not complain when inconvenienced.

Needless to say, I now never ever travel without a comb, mascara, toothbrush & clean pair of knickers in my bag!

  • Good afternoon Lindybird, have only just logged in as I felt I realy had to get down to some housework as nothing much has been done over the past few days.  Pleased to say I am gradually getting back into the land of the living.  This infection has certainly knocked me sidewise.

That holiday treat must have been awful and also the fact that you lost days of the week getting there.  We hve in the past come across people we know when we are on holiday which is always a bit of a shock.

I knw what  you mean about having certain items in your hand liggage as coming back from Italy one year we had an internal flight first followed on by a flight to Heathrow.  Unfurtunately there was bad weather In Milan and we missed the connecting flight and had to wait 6 hours for another one.  Ubnfortunately we arrived back at Heathrow too late to get the coach back to Poole and had to sit on hard chairs all night trying our best to get some sleep.  In all it took us 24 hours from when we left the hotel to when we eventually arrived home so it was all a bit of a nightmare.

Not a very nice day hear again but managed to go and see to my birds in between heavy showers.  Noticing now how the blackbird is giving us a beautiful song at dusk and also heard a robin too last evening when it was nearly dark.

Hope you are having a good day.

    Margobird

  • Good afternoon Alan so glad Hamish is recovering well and I am wishing for good news about him.  My sister's springer had a growth removed from his leg when he was quite young but all was OK so I am thinking positive thoughts for Hamish.

Tried to post yesterday but had trouble.  Wanted to say thanks for the links, news and photo of the orchid which was beautiful.

Bit warmer today here but heavy showers all morning and I think they are saying there is a chance we could get a snow shower but hopefully not.

We have crocus eut in the garden which is amazing as they had been covered by snow and then ice.  Marvellous how nature copes with extreme weather.
