I'll agree with that - what a lovely photo! My photographic technique when it comes to birds in flight needs a LOT of work.
Our herring gulls are red listed birds. Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.
I've sent him an email to see if he can read the letters as he may have just thought it was a colour code.
Early this year he was using a Sigma zoom 500mm, can't remember the make of SLR.

I've never tried one of those. I'm using a Canon EOS 400D (quite old!) with a Tamron 200-500mm lens. I get on well with it but it doesn't have an image stabiliser.

The observer has sent me the photos & it seems to be AU9, I have sent it on to Roy Dennis as it looks like one of his.

Blue AU1 was reported as a juvenile on migration in Sep 12 here, so it's likely that AU9 was one of a batch of rings held by the same ringer, and used this year.
