Weir Wood more...
Having had a call last evening from a colleague of mine about a Red-rumped Swallow, I thought best get down there early. First thing at the west end it was devoid of hirundines. In the dull dreary weather the birds I noted were the pair of Tufted Ducks, two male Mandarins, the two pairs of Common Terns and the collection of Great Crested Grebe and Grey Herons. So I made my way to the dam, here two Common Sandpipers and the displaying Little Ringed Plovers were still present. As the morning was colder than yesterday I wasn't expecting too much to happen, however as time passed House Martin numbers steadily grew, eventually reaching 140 birds feeding over the dam. There were 30 or so Swallows with them and 20 Swifts, little else though sadly. Then after having a chat with a couple of people at 10.10 I picked up the Osprey, at last! This bird has been here for three days previous, yet somehow I'd missed it on every visit until now. It caught a sizable feast quickly then promptly disappeared. Perhaps it's just that good at fishing, visiting only when needs must. Anyway, I again made my way to the west end, within ten minutes I was astonished as the RED-RUMPED SWALLOW flew past the car park towards the heronry. It was amongst an impressive flock of Swallows and House Martins, numbering approx 180 birds, with a near 50/50 split. I lost it from view only to refind it at 11.00 flying low around the platforms. I had to leave then, returning an hour later, two other observers were there and at 12.20 we all saw the bird again distantly at first before it began flying around the platforms again, watching it for 10 minutes before we lost it in the flock. I left at 12.50, domestic stuff to do. Delighted of course that perseverance can pay off.
