Hi All. Don't forget to check last page or so of previous week for all the latest! Granddaughter made excellent time to AZ - got there at 4 p.m. our time - an 8 hour ride with minimal (comparatively speaking) traffic through LA early this morning. Thunder received hysterical greeting from Pepito, tiny noisy companion who wondered where Thunder had gone but was much too noisy and excitable to bring along. Brought Oro home for successful visit after which I went on a hunt-and-scoop mission to clean up yard after two large dogs. Oh fun! Daughter and I watched Wallace and Gromit DVD (the "were-rabbit" one) - a hoot. OH and I just remembered we have tickets for Charlie Rose (PBS interviewer) this evening so have to hose myself down, prop open my eyelids and try to stay awake for another few hours. Why do these things start at 8 p.m.?!
Thanks Alan for reminder re Phoebe (keep reminding us since I'm so busy running and fetching); four big storms due this week with threat of flooding, high winds, power outages. Sounds like real weather!! TerryM: Will pass on gerbil story to hamster! Lindybird: All hankies put away now! :-) Congrats on the redecorating and dibnlib: I'm with you from now on - hire the folks who can do it in half the time (at four times the cost, yes, but....)

Apparently Lily the bear is in labor with the second cub with dramatic movement (described as "body slams" on that page's blog). There's a long and interesting update on the blog (to the right of the image) but you have to sign in - it takes just a minute - to read it. Missed the deer on the Estonia 2 cam, which has been "choppy" this last week, constantly reloading after just a few seconds even though I've updated relevant software. Is anyone else having this problem?
Golly, I feel as if I've been away for a couple of days or something, there is so much on here to read: Have so enjoyed reading all the postings & seeing pics etc.
AQ: We used to say in our family "they couldn't run a whelk stall!!" but I don't know where that comes from, we are not from a town by the sea! Glad your daughter was OK & enjoyed her ride, but it sounds a bit disorganised to say the least.

Heron77: Agree about the 'gore' in films, in the 'old days!' we used to find it more scary that things were just implied, or even just the suspense involved. Nowadays its all ketchup & effects, & I'm afraid I get bored with it.
georgeg: also saw the programme about farming - it was one of the series about Jimmy the farmer, & it was all in USA for this section, but I was very cross when I saw how some of the pigs were kept in crates for the whole of their wretched lives. The other parts, about the bison etc. were very interesting.
Damp & dark here today. Scurried into the supermarket for boring supplies, cheered myself up by buying a jolly looking houseplant, then left it on the counter! Slunk back in & claimed it later, when I realised I hadnt unpacked it from my trolley. Memory like a sieve these days.

Just been watching the film "Little Women" the one with Winona Ryder & Susan Sarandon in it. Very nice, but preferred the original one with oooh ! it's gone again, can't remember her name but great actress, once played James Stewarts wife in famous film. Will go away & look it up now. Anyway, did LOVE book when I was young, read it until it was all dog-eared & still have my copy now.
June Allyson! Just found it. & Elizabeth Taylor was in it, too. 1949! Thought it was made a while ago!
Talking of fights with technology, Friend & Husband are having a good tussle with a new DVD player given to them as a present, they have hitched it up to all the right portholes but it still won't put a whole screen on the TV. I told them they need an 11 year old to come & sort it out for them.
Off to cook dinner now, roast chicken tonight but not many trimmings with it, as its just us two today. We broke any diet we were on this lunchtime by having a bag of small chocolate doughnuts from the shop - wish I hadn't ate them now, ho hum.
ps Relatives have just got a new black & white puppy - female. Will try to get a photo when we visit to admire her!
Diane in Indiana - The history of your house is mindblowing. I am so ignorant about 'homesteading' - is that a wee bit like laura ingalls wilder's stories? Sorry if I am completely wrong here. Also, I was quite shocked to read about your multiple equipment failures, but as we say, that's the way it goes, and here, we say, everything happens in threes--- . It is just the sort of day that everyone dreads. At present, I am being VERY kind to my washing machine, it is 15 years old and all I can say is that I try to keep my laundry basket empty - ie keep filling the machine in case it decides to stop working.

I don't tend to catch these things too often but they tend to arrive with all guns blazing.AQ: Glad your daughter enjoyed the 110 km ride. Sorry to hear there was a bit of orginisational let-down. You'd think they'd make sure things were in good working order and riders were all well catered for. Like the "couldn't run a chook raffle" line. As for slower riders being bullied by faster riders, I remember seeing a sign in a barber's shop a few years ago that said: "I have only two speeds for cutting hair. If you don't like this one, you sure won't like the other one."Diane: I'm a big fan of Stephen King's work. I remember reading The Tommyknockers, a few years ago. It's a great book and I remember seeing the film on TV a few years ago. I think horror and science fiction are genres that can easilly merge into each other, probably due to the fear of the unknown.Auntie: Thanks for the beer picture. I wonder if they'll ever start selling Karhu Olut, in this part of the world.Annette: The taste buds are starting to very, very slowly get back to fitness. Totally agree with you about losing sense of taste being worse than a cold it's self. I think a lot of horror movies these days do depend too much on special effects, as you say. Glad you liked the picture.Alan: I must admit that I used to sort of dismiss science fiction but it seems to be appealing to me a lot more these days.
