This Topic has been set up to follow the Autumn 2012 migration and wintering of satellite tracked ospreys, other than Caledonia and Alba from Loch Garten, who are followed on this thread, Tracking Caledonia & Alba
This topic replaces Satellite Tracked Ospreys (non-LG) Mar-Aug 2012
N.B. There are still some missing details (and possibly birds) which I will add once the information becomes available.
The Gambia and Guinea Bissau are not good areas for young ospreys. Ths list of casualties is growing :
Very sad Alan when you look at your Map.....
EJ's Memorial Balgavies Loch Ospreys 2023
Depressing news - I thought it was a good omen that she had been photographed earlier and had hoped she would stay in that park. Alan's map showing the known birds is a sobering thought but how many others unknown? Frightening.
I was discussing the same thing yesterday Tempo, these are only the ones we know about. I keep being told if all survived there would be too many, which would bring different problems.

I wonder if where they winter is in the genes, for instance if more wintered in Spain/Portugal maybe more would survive?

Lynda, Personally I doubt that - and the main reason is LG's experience of tracking chicks from the nest.
All 8 tracked to date have had EJ as a mother, and 4 of them (Rothes, Mallachie, Tore and Bynack) were definitely fathered by Odin.
Six (including Odin's four) went to sub-Saharan Africa, but didn't make for the same area at all - instead, they spread themselves out over the countries where UK ospreys in general are known to winter.
Then we have Caledonia staying in Spain; but her possible father, Blue XD, has himself been tracked to a wintering site in Senegal.

I am just a novice at this but it seems to me that from January onwards the juveniles get into difficulties in Africa. Nowhere is safe for them - look at Erika who had a freak accident for an experienced bird.
BlueYD update : Little change, fishing in the sea and roosting inland :
Fiddich has probably perished, I posted this on the summary thread earlier today. Maybe you missed it.
"RD reports that sadly Fiddich has been killed, either by a fishing net or caught, signals coming from a village."
It would be wonderful, if I have jumped to the wrong conclusion!!

LG 7 days; RW & SWT nil; LDOP varies
No I don't think you have jsb. The evidence looked pretty conclusive didn't it? Very sad indeed if Fiddich has ended up in the pot, but those people have to live too.
