Satellite Tracked Ospreys (non-LG) Aug 2012 - Sep 2014

This Topic has been set up to follow the Autumn 2012 migration and wintering of satellite tracked ospreys, other than Caledonia and Alba from Loch Garten, who are followed on this thread, Tracking Caledonia & Alba   

This topic replaces Satellite Tracked Ospreys (non-LG) Mar-Aug 2012 

N.B. There are still some missing details (and possibly birds) which I will add once the information becomes available.

    Well according to Roy Dennis he expects them to overwinter in Brittany in the future when the old climate change kicks in. I posted a link about ospreys beginning to overwinter in Chesapeake Bay in the USA the other day.

    A few ospreys do winter in southern France. There's an article on p6 of this French "Osprey Magazine" from 2010 about wintering sites in Aquitaine. 
    The photos are of the Marais d'Orx - only about 6 miles south of Blue 44's current stop - which has been a regular wintering site since the mid 2000's. Interestingly, they also mention that there was a wintering osprey in 2007-8, and possibly also in 2010, at the Etang Noir and neighbouring lakes, where 44 is now. The main disadvantages would be weather - both wet and cold, fish going deep to avoid that, and short daylight hours for fishing in mid-winter.
    I would think the warden who SWT have been put in touch with, is either Paul Lesclaux or Stephanie Darblade, who seems to be based at Etang Noir.

    I believe we may have had an overwintering Osprey in the Charente Maritime last winter. It was seen at Saint-Savinien on th 14/1, 7/3, 9/3, 11/3, 14/3, 18/3, & 29/3. Also seen at Saintes the 6/1 & 7/2. Also at Port d'Envaux on the 13/1. These 3 communes are in a 15 to 20km diameter circle. The observation of 7/2 was in a very cold spell with temperaures going down to -15 °C at night! Normally its not so cold in winter, but if it is very cold then Brittany is often the warmest bit, as the cold comes staight across the middle of France from Siberia!

    Tiger I too am anxiously waiting to hear Stan's update - he must be exhausted and my concern is that he so very nearly went out over the ocean again.

    He is probably seeing his agent so that he can best exploit his news status as champion osprey. Mind you he may be diqualified for straying off course :)

    :) I just hope he gets the south west bit out of his brain now and stays put or turns east.
