Hazel C said:I'm not sure that they would like you calling their beautiful lakes PONDS though!!!
Well, I thought.......gosh.....I've made a faux-pas!!
But no. I thought I had better check Larousse French/Engliish. We have as follows.....
etang nm, pond.....the only translation shown. Even although I sometimes think the literal translation can be well off the mark.
lake GEOG, lac m.
Funnily an osprey expression.....for Ceulan learning French, as Emyr would have us believe.
"go jump in a lake!"
"va te faire cuire un oeuf!"
(go and cook yourself an egg!)
I always refer to my fish pond as 'un bassin' when discussing it with the French.
In the dictionary étang is pond but in general usage it's a small lake. A pond can be a 'mare' or 'bassin d'eau'. Looking at the map these are big lakes.
There are always funny words, or words used in a funny way, yesterday we heard on the french radio that the sales of a Bordeaux wine were STAGNANT, not a word we would use. ''Stagnant Wine'' Yuch!! I think stable would have been nicer!!
Best wishes

Our herring gulls are red listed birds. Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.
Updates for Alba, Caledonia, Blue YD, Blue 44, Aigan, Fiddich and Ceulan.
Thank You jsb - so good to be able to click on your spreadsheet and get all the information in one place. Great work!!!

JSB : Just want to echo what every one else has said. You are doing a fantastic job keeping up with the birds on your spreadsheet. It is just great to click on it and find out all the latest positions especially as I have been busy with 'badgering' people lately.
Can anyone advise roughly how far Blue YD has to travel to get to water pls? Stupidly I thought he had most of his journey over him
