  • Its strange that there is no ring number details on Roys website for Fearna and Fiddoch.    I see from Rachels post above that Fearna's ring number could be AA7 or AA9, does anyone know for sure what their ring numbers are???

  • Mary, that is the mystery to keep us all occupied for the rest of the week!!!! no idea why those two have no details.  Will have to think of some internet superhighway prize for the winner.... But in fairness Roy has moved/had technology issues lately - sure I read that somewhere?

  • Yes Roy moved house on Thursday 6th September if memory serves me right.

You can imagine the chaos that would cause.

LMac - not sure how we can find out but I am sure someone will LOL, so thats three challenges we have, who is Blue XC, and the ring numbers of Fiddich ad Fearna, doesnt Roy have an assistant? maybe someone will know this and if so could he/she be contacted?    other than that it is a waiting game LOL...

  • Morning Mary. There is a real team effort about these projects now!

  • Morning T. - There is nothing like the mysteries of Ring Numbers to get us going LOL...

Given that Aigan is definitely AA3, and they seem to have used the numbers in order (long may it last!), her sister Fiddich must be AA4 or AA5 (there were 3 chicks in that nest) - I tend to think they are likely to have done the two tagged chicks in succession. Fearna is presumably either AA7 or AA9, depending on whether the intervening nest had 1 or 2 chicks. All speculation, however - I have asked on FB for a bit more info on Fearna, but I suppose it is a matter of time. He is obviously very busy at present.

Re Roy's assistants - there is Becky who looks after the Facebook page; I think he has someone helping him with the website, but could be wrong there - both that and twitter do read as if written by Roy. And of course there are the various people he works with on the practical side. Whether any of them have access to his records, I have no idea. Possibly not, though - surely background on XC would be a fairly high priority, especially with the request coming via Emyr at Dyfi. Or maybe Roy just needs some help getting his records into order (in which case I'd be delighted to help! I can't think of anything much better than a working holiday in Moray with free access to Roy's notes...)

Indeed. Maybe you could solve the mystery of how Blue XD was originally supposed to be Black 8X

Mind that one is perhaps insoluble!

  • Maybe Roy's handwriting is just much worse than it appears in the notebook 'extracts' in Life of Ospreys! I suspect those were fair copies, perhaps done especially for the book - they are far too neat to be genuine field notes. Could even be typed up - there are some very convincing 'manuscript' fonts around these days.

  • Rachel I think I am going to re-name you "Miss Marple" LOL - you definitely are better at solving the mysteries than I can thats for sure LOL...  At least you have it solved down to the point of one or two possibilites for both birds.     Now I am sure there would be a queue a mile long to be his Assistant and get access to Roy's records LOL....    BLUE XC well I think we are presuming that she is from somewhere around the Rothiemurchus area, but would be nice to know a little bit more about her.
