Tracking Caledonia & Alba

This thread has been set up to follow the travels of Caledonia and Alba, the young ospreys raised at Loch Garten in 2012.

Their mother is “EJ”, the resident female at Loch Garten since 2003; there is some doubt about the identity of their biological father, given EJ’s dalliance with a male from a neighbouring nest, Blue XD, both before and after the return of her regular partner Odin, who raised them.

Caledonia hatched on 16th May and Alba on 18th   May; they both fledged on 14th July.

This is a link to the Loch Garten blog describing the ringing and satellite tagging.

Caledonia’s ring is Blue/White AA1, reading downwards. Alba’s is Blue/White AA2, reading upwards.

Following the tracking

This page gives a quick overview of the routes on a map, which will be more useful once they start migrating.

If you want to look at the routes in more detail on Google Earth, this page contains instructions on setting up your PC to do this.

This blog contains some useful information about how the tracking works – we are now on a 3-day reporting period.

  • Alan: Maybe I should take up darts! OK maybe not in the case of Caledonia.

P.S. I have not checked for correlation with your sightings yet.

  • JSB : Amazing how accurate your path was for Alba. There is a good chance that this sighting was Alba:

From memory, I think at least one of his birds (Rothiemurchus, or one of the adults?) has flown Biscay repeatedly, so not necessarily a bad strategy - just a bit nerve-racking to watch. Whatever the reason, I'm glad Alba's points continue until she got back over land this morning!

Rachel -Thank you for this (You have a fantastic memory - I have to check my records) - Rothiemurchus flew non stop over the bay of Biscay on his first migration but changed route and avoided it last year.

Red 8T as you point out has done similar on occasions taking a direct route and other times the more not so nerve racking to watch routing. I  must look up Roys other previous birds.

TIGER posted a wee while back that Deshar taught us so much in his epic 2600 mile journey over 104 hours that The Bay of Biscay is not that long given the correct conditions and as he posted tonight The Bay of Biscay is not a problem again given the correct conditions.

  • Einion from Dyfi flew the Bay of Biscay last year.

For a baby bird it must seem pretty daunting...

All for one and one for all.

  • T09 in 2000 was probably the only osprey I know of that failed to get across the Bay of Biscay. She was thought to be forced down by gulls as she approached the north coast of Spain.

Initially it was felt that U04  in 2001 had suffered the same fate but there was a suprise in store. Not a happy one though.

  • They're both in quite a hurry compared with Tore and Bynack (apart from Bynack's big jump to Bruge!).  I wonder what they know that we don't?

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

It is a pity we can't see the data for Roy's birds on GE - it would be very interesting to be able to directly compare routes for all the known tagged UK ospreys.

Yes, been thinking the same thing for some time Rachel. A great pity indeed.

Are there no times of the Loch Garten data?

Tiger: You may recall that all the data is in the 'kml' files. However it is up to the end user (in our case) RSPB what they select to show on the GE map. The GE'properties' do not show it either.

I did try to read the 'kml' file as I have done in the past, but it does not work anymore for me, it just opens GE, instead of the file shown as a text file on a webpage. When it opens in GE you end up with two lots of entries in 'My places' which is useless. This should not be tried.

  • TIGER - Was just reading through my Translocations R's - T's and U's but you are too fast for me. I think I had fifteen to read to find their routings and still not there - How do you retrieve this so quick ?
