This thread has been set up to follow the travels of Caledonia and Alba, the young ospreys raised at Loch Garten in 2012.
Their mother is “EJ”, the resident female at Loch Garten since 2003; there is some doubt about the identity of their biological father, given EJ’s dalliance with a male from a neighbouring nest, Blue XD, both before and after the return of her regular partner Odin, who raised them.
Caledonia hatched on 16th May and Alba on 18th May; they both fledged on 14th July.
This is a link to the Loch Garten blog describing the ringing and satellite tagging.
Caledonia’s ring is Blue/White AA1, reading downwards. Alba’s is Blue/White AA2, reading upwards.
Following the tracking
This page gives a quick overview of the routes on a map, which will be more useful once they start migrating.
If you want to look at the routes in more detail on Google Earth, this page contains instructions on setting up your PC to do this.
This blog contains some useful information about how the tracking works – we are now on a 3-day reporting period.
MULBERRY, Thanks for the link to the newspaper article about Caledonia. TV next......
It's amazing to see the change in her feathers in what seems just a short time. And she's looking really well, thank goodness. Roberto you have made many of us so very very happy with your good news of 'our' girl, and so glad she has a female friend to keep her company:-))) THANK YOU SO MUCH

Roberto, you're a true star !! That picture is fabulous---she looks so fit and well. Thank you so much for all you are doing---it's like a dream come true for all us fans, and so brilliant for LG to have you looking out for our bird--we've had such hard times with the young ospreys but this makes it all worth while. Many many thanks.

I feel so bad as wanting to hear Muri's report and apologise and we should not expect but I have always followed Caledonia and excited. Muri I hope you had a good weekend and thank you so much. Maybe let Richard report and more than happy with that :) The suspense of the other Osprey so intriguing :) muchas gracias
Hi everybody,
This morning I took some testimonial photos of Caledonia at her fishing area to show you how she is moulting her primary remiges. In the picture you can see the moult gap matching with the primary 3 (counting from the proximal side to the wing tip). Juvenile ospreys start moulting approximately in their fifth month after fledging following a moulting wave from primary 1 to primary 10 with a rate of roughly one feather per month. Given that Caledonia fledged in mid July, she had to start moulting in December (primary 1) and now, February, she is moulting her primary 3. Thus, she is adjusting “perfectly” to the expected moulting schedule for the species.
Best regards ;)
Roberto
Fantastic once again Roberto.
