Tracking Caledonia & Alba

This thread has been set up to follow the travels of Caledonia and Alba, the young ospreys raised at Loch Garten in 2012.

Their mother is “EJ”, the resident female at Loch Garten since 2003; there is some doubt about the identity of their biological father, given EJ’s dalliance with a male from a neighbouring nest, Blue XD, both before and after the return of her regular partner Odin, who raised them.

Caledonia hatched on 16th May and Alba on 18th   May; they both fledged on 14th July.

This is a link to the Loch Garten blog describing the ringing and satellite tagging.

Caledonia’s ring is Blue/White AA1, reading downwards. Alba’s is Blue/White AA2, reading upwards.

Following the tracking

This page gives a quick overview of the routes on a map, which will be more useful once they start migrating.

If you want to look at the routes in more detail on Google Earth, this page contains instructions on setting up your PC to do this.

This blog contains some useful information about how the tracking works – we are now on a 3-day reporting period.

  • There is a new BLOG from Richard confirming the GE info.

  • I remember Ozwald well Tiger.   Hopefully the girls and Alba in particular will stop off and master the fishing bit before embarking on the hazardous Sahara and may she make it a swift journey across it.    It would have been so nice if the girls had kept together for migration seeing they left Garten together.    Wishful thinking big time I know!

  • Goood morning all and thanks to everyone for their imput on this thread.  Great to see both girls are fine and I am amazed at how far Alba has flown since the last update.  Hope they will both have a bit of rest and catch some fish before they fly on towards the Sahara.  Neither of theme hung around in the UK for long unlike Tore last year.  Already looking forward to the next update.

  • I have a mass of info on my Google Earth relating to previous Ospreys. I want to remove all except the current year ie: Caledonia and Alba etc. Unticking and 'deleting' seems to have no effect. Could someone please assist. I thought this might be a better place to post, as it is specific, rather than Technical. Thank you.

  • Mike

You can untick the whole "Loch Garten Ospreys" folder and then reselect the Route/Points folders for Cally and Ally only, but I take it you may already know that.

This only works within the current access to GE - I don't know a way of removing the folders for previously tracked birds permanently.

  • Mike I agree that Sue's technique works and is the one I use.

However if you you click on the individual birds a menu comes up with a <delete> option. Now I have not tried that nor do I particularly want to try it. However if the lines bother you that much then it may be the way forward.

  • Mike Glad you asked that question.  I have to 'untick' previous years' tracks bu don't really want to remove them altogether - now I know I'm doing the right thing!  So glad the girls have made such progress.  A good rest and plenty of fish would be just great before they tackle Africa!

  • The RSPB 'kml' file is a complete record of all the birds (last time when I was able to see it) they just keep adding each year's new birds to the list. I personally think that is of great value, which allows us to compare the various tracks. The 'kml' file was readable as I have commented already, but now I cannot see it as a text file, which is a shame, because it gives all the info sent to Google, not just what we can see on GE, which is a selection of various 'fields'.

  • The only efficient way of doing this is to create a separate kml file for each year. We all know what happened in previous years, and none of them are currently updating. To have the previous years birds in a different file to this years birds not only keeps this years file smaller and cleaner, but allows us to not see the previous years tracks.

Currently, if we delete tracks on GE, then the next update rewrites all we have deleted and puts them back again. That kml file is probably getting unnecessarily large to handle now. Its probably a wise thing to do to keep each years tracks in one file. We can still open all years we want to look at if thats what is wanted for comparison.

  • Cooky : That seems like a sensible idea to me. The Swedish ospreys are kept on a seperate kml file for each bird, the same applies for the Finnish ospreys and their White Tailed Eagles. The kml file must be getting big and unwieldy by now.
