This thread has been set up to follow the travels of Caledonia and Alba, the young ospreys raised at Loch Garten in 2012.
Their mother is “EJ”, the resident female at Loch Garten since 2003; there is some doubt about the identity of their biological father, given EJ’s dalliance with a male from a neighbouring nest, Blue XD, both before and after the return of her regular partner Odin, who raised them.
Caledonia hatched on 16th May and Alba on 18th May; they both fledged on 14th July.
This is a link to the Loch Garten blog describing the ringing and satellite tagging.
Caledonia’s ring is Blue/White AA1, reading downwards. Alba’s is Blue/White AA2, reading upwards.
Following the tracking
This page gives a quick overview of the routes on a map, which will be more useful once they start migrating.
If you want to look at the routes in more detail on Google Earth, this page contains instructions on setting up your PC to do this.
This blog contains some useful information about how the tracking works – we are now on a 3-day reporting period.
All the more reason to look forward to the next activity report for Cally.
IMAGICAT
Thanks Sue C for these reports. Oh dear just when we thought Caledonia was safe and fishing well, now we will be worrying about her, those rivers look pretty bad, maybe Roberto will read these posts and give us an update as to what the fishing conditions are like at Caledonia's favourite spot. Hopefully we should get an update from Richard today.
EJ's Memorial Balgavies Loch Ospreys 2023
Hopefully the rivers will subside fairly quickly. A river beside me burst its banks for the first time weeks back and flooded a large field but within a couple of days it subsided to almost normal. Perhaps she may move but I know its very worrying.
Well remember that her favourite spot is the closed-off channel through the city - discussed on the previous page - where conditions are very much controlled by man. It's possible they may allow the water level to rise even in there, if they need somewhere to put all this water as it comes downstream, but I doubt that it would be turbulent like the rivers. Perhaps Roberto will report.
Sue C Thanks for those link. All very fascinating. They really do have forums for everything these days.
Tiger Signature
Wow! Thanks Sue, very interesting. That is some rain!
ChloeB & Tiger's Osprey Data
Caledonia updated on Google Earth to 14.03.2013. Looks like more movement than normal perhaps down to the weather conditions
Thanks Alan, much appreciated.....
Caledonia visited a new reservoir on the 11th, known as Cala or Lagos del Serrano. Some of the reservoir fans had been there taking pictures on the 9th, posted in this thread - it looks rather chocolatey.
Caledonia also made several visits to lakes or old gravel pits, which may reflect the state of the rivers. She has been back to Hacienda de la Vibora, which she visited in late Feb - see this page
Thanks SueC you are doing a fantastic job updating and so much appreciated. It does look chocolatey. Lets hope she is managing to continue to catch fish but she seems very wise for a young Opsrey :)
