This thread has been set up to follow the travels of Caledonia and Alba, the young ospreys raised at Loch Garten in 2012.
Their mother is “EJ”, the resident female at Loch Garten since 2003; there is some doubt about the identity of their biological father, given EJ’s dalliance with a male from a neighbouring nest, Blue XD, both before and after the return of her regular partner Odin, who raised them.
Caledonia hatched on 16th May and Alba on 18th May; they both fledged on 14th July.
This is a link to the Loch Garten blog describing the ringing and satellite tagging.
Caledonia’s ring is Blue/White AA1, reading downwards. Alba’s is Blue/White AA2, reading upwards.
Following the tracking
This page gives a quick overview of the routes on a map, which will be more useful once they start migrating.
If you want to look at the routes in more detail on Google Earth, this page contains instructions on setting up your PC to do this.
This blog contains some useful information about how the tracking works – we are now on a 3-day reporting period.
Am just gutted to hear this heartbreaking news. But it must be horrible for LG staff to see another of their birds go down. I really thought she had found a safe haven but it looks like nowhere is safe and its a miracle any of them survive.
Caledonia latest. Pretty much as before except for one or 2 longer trips.
Alba s last position:
why oh why did she leave her regular place? would have been a very different outcome. but I suppose there is no point in what ifs :((
I was wondering what the 17 km movement to the south east was about. That suggests that some other agent was involved.
Any crocodiles in the area? Or was she attacked and wounded?

Seagull she maybe had no choice as the older established Ospreys are back and I honestly thought she was holding her ground.
My oppinion and not pushing and understand others views but I think tracking should stop for a few years and see if any make it back to LG but they still have to identify??? another question
So many nests in Scotland!!! not known or published and intruders in the past could be EJ's and strongly believe and no-one can prove if one from 2010 returned this year. Not for here and apologise all.
I have edited
If one looks closely at the map for Alba it does show that whatever happened did so on Saturday 20th October. That last point on 20th October is in the sea.
Question is how did she then get to her last recorded postion?

a croc and yes it could happen and to me Alba is dead and very upset. Maybe if they find the tracker then will we get the truth. if so no way
I am still concerned about 09 and glad Roy Dennis never caught any adults as AW and 09 dead in a year. The proof will be if RW do not track again and I think they will not.
Sorry this needs to move somewhere else and yes Tiger interesting
I do apologise all as not for here.
I was looking closely at the area of the last fix (23rd), but had the suspicion of human involvement in her movement. The area of the last fix is populated, with agriculture, tracks and some signs of settlement. ( Incidentally I see that Caledonia has taken to perching on pylons, there is one with a pronounced shadow on the ground at her last fix.) I got distracted by Autumnwatch, so shall have another look at Alba.
