This thread has been set up to follow the travels of Caledonia and Alba, the young ospreys raised at Loch Garten in 2012.
Their mother is “EJ”, the resident female at Loch Garten since 2003; there is some doubt about the identity of their biological father, given EJ’s dalliance with a male from a neighbouring nest, Blue XD, both before and after the return of her regular partner Odin, who raised them.
Caledonia hatched on 16th May and Alba on 18th May; they both fledged on 14th July.
This is a link to the Loch Garten blog describing the ringing and satellite tagging.
Caledonia’s ring is Blue/White AA1, reading downwards. Alba’s is Blue/White AA2, reading upwards.
Following the tracking
This page gives a quick overview of the routes on a map, which will be more useful once they start migrating.
If you want to look at the routes in more detail on Google Earth, this page contains instructions on setting up your PC to do this.
This blog contains some useful information about how the tracking works – we are now on a 3-day reporting period.
Thank you both RACHEL and COOKY - It's been good to hear bout the local environment that Alba has/is been in and I feel very much re-assured as to her welfare.
Thank you all for your discussion - I have had to read back as only able to get online at certain times, so depend on my mobile for updates. First yearlings like myself find the comments from those of you with experience over the years invaluable, and very reassuring! Fingers crossed that Alba finds a safe place to settle soon after a remarkable journey, and that Cally also stays safe and settles safely. In fact, I can't help wishing she'd stay in Spain - it appears to be safer than Africa, with my limited knowledge of course!
So the update is due today. We get to find out where Alba and Cally actually are in recent times.

Hioefully Alba has found a safe fish laden area to build her feisty self back up after that amazing migration. I wonder if Cally will have loitered a while longer in Spain.
Can't wait for the update. Feeling a bit nervous about it, but trusting in Alba's ability to fend for herself!
Feeling very nervous too and hoping she is safe at a good fishing spot
Monring all and fingers crossed for good news when the latest update comes in. I too hope Alba has found herself a good fishing spot to build her strength up.

She should have found the Senegal river a few days ago.
Just looked in, to see that Richard T. is signed in to the site. I was going to the gym, but guess I'll have to wait now!!
