This thread has been set up to follow the travels of Caledonia and Alba, the young ospreys raised at Loch Garten in 2012.
Their mother is “EJ”, the resident female at Loch Garten since 2003; there is some doubt about the identity of their biological father, given EJ’s dalliance with a male from a neighbouring nest, Blue XD, both before and after the return of her regular partner Odin, who raised them.
Caledonia hatched on 16th May and Alba on 18th May; they both fledged on 14th July.
This is a link to the Loch Garten blog describing the ringing and satellite tagging.
Caledonia’s ring is Blue/White AA1, reading downwards. Alba’s is Blue/White AA2, reading upwards.
Following the tracking
This page gives a quick overview of the routes on a map, which will be more useful once they start migrating.
If you want to look at the routes in more detail on Google Earth, this page contains instructions on setting up your PC to do this.
This blog contains some useful information about how the tracking works – we are now on a 3-day reporting period.
I would like the date format to be changed from (eg) 20 August 2012 to 20 08 12, or 20-08-12 if that's clearer, to reduce the terrible clutter when the points are displayed. I suppose that would have to be done in the original "program"?

I deselect all the points and then put back the ones I want.

I don't bother with the dates because of the clutter and I am with COOKY all the way on speparate kml files but I think we're dreaming if we hope that's going to happen. Much less your date format SCYLLA :) but hey - what treasure we have on GE regardless. Just so long as all the birds arrive safe and sound.
The main problem is that it is too big a jump from one point to all of the points. It would be better if we could select the last week or last month or indeed last year.
I cant see a problem with separate files. Once one season is over, then just close the file and start a new one. Birds not tracked in the current year wouldn't show and clutter the map. Its much the same as what happened on the daily Loch Garten updates. That certainly kept the forum updates easier to handle.
Ive just looked at the data on the kml file and believe me, theres a lot going back a number of years. It really must be a nightmare to handle. A lot of potential for mistakes.
This should really be on the technical thread, but since the discussion is here.........
I now have the kml file as of today, as a text document. So I will now be able to see all the data. I could offer to answer questions..........haha!! only kidding that would drive me mad quite soon :O)
Please do not try this unless you feel reasonably confident in what you are attempting to do.
If you want to get it yourself, copy the link string via the google properties of Loch Garten Ospreys or get it here..........
>>>>>> www.rspb.org.uk/.../lochgartenospreys.kml do not click on this it will open GE, copy and paste it into a browser
EDIT: Correction.....I just tested the link above and it does allow you the transfer open the file in notepad....but it didn't do that before!!!!!!
Then paste it into a browser, I used Firefox........
Then Firefox or whatever will ask which program you wish to use to open the file......
I said Notepad, to get a text file.
You the have to understand the structure of the file to be able to read it.
This is what Google have to say about kml.

I still feel that the ability to compare tracks is an argument for leaving things as they are. If each year was unique, the menu on the left of the GE pane would become too crowded. Updating files could also be problematical, leading to mistakes. Against that if these projects continue over the years then something would need to be done, something that Google will be aware of I am sure. So a technical solution would be better, rather more of the same.

I've always done that, TIGER. But when you want to see movements and dates, and the route crisscrosses, it's a mess.
I though we'd have an update today, been refreshing like a madwoman ;-)
