This thread has been set up to follow the travels of Caledonia and Alba, the young ospreys raised at Loch Garten in 2012.
Their mother is “EJ”, the resident female at Loch Garten since 2003; there is some doubt about the identity of their biological father, given EJ’s dalliance with a male from a neighbouring nest, Blue XD, both before and after the return of her regular partner Odin, who raised them.
Caledonia hatched on 16th May and Alba on 18th May; they both fledged on 14th July.
This is a link to the Loch Garten blog describing the ringing and satellite tagging.
Caledonia’s ring is Blue/White AA1, reading downwards. Alba’s is Blue/White AA2, reading upwards.
Following the tracking
This page gives a quick overview of the routes on a map, which will be more useful once they start migrating.
If you want to look at the routes in more detail on Google Earth, this page contains instructions on setting up your PC to do this.
This blog contains some useful information about how the tracking works – we are now on a 3-day reporting period.

ChloeB & Tiger's Osprey Data
This pair are really getting a move on compared to previous years chicks. Amazing progress so far.
EJ's Memorial Balgavies Loch Ospreys 2023
Interesting: Alba is the first of EJ's 8 tracked offspring to take the direct Biscay route. Not counting Deshar, all the others (6) have stayed over land.
It is a pity we can't see the data for Roy's birds on GE - it would be very interesting to be able to directly compare routes for all the known tagged UK ospreys. That might begin to give us an idea whether this is a typical pattern.
From memory, I think at least one of his birds (Rothiemurchus, or one of the adults?) has flown Biscay repeatedly, so not necessarily a bad strategy - just a bit nerve-racking to watch. Whatever the reason, I'm glad Alba's points continue until she got back over land this morning!
Great news, glad to see both Cally and Alba are doing ok.
The Bay of Biscay is not a big problem for an osprey. Many ospreys have flown a lot further.
Tiger Signature
Are there no times of the Loch Garten data?
So it appears that Alba spent a whole day in South Wales (24th), before setting off again SSW over the Bristol Channel, on through Devon passing Tiverton, Exeter, Paignton and Dartmouth before heading south for an overnight flight across the English Channel landing in Brittany, France at Tregastel on the 26th. She didn't linger there but continued WSW across Brittany and off again for another overnight flight across the Bay of Biscay landing in Manon, northern Spain this morning, 27th
