EJ

I have always felt that we should have a thread for EJ as well as Odin.

My countdown clock says that we might expect her to swoop into Loch Garten 76 days from now. I hjope it has warmed up by then.

  • Hi All......... I am having trouble as a newcomer in reading all the fascinating threads, but I can't see that Keith's post of 3 Jan has been challenged. EJ is now back safe and sound, so now seems a good opppoortunity to rush to her defence. It was suggested that in 2003 EJ may have been the cause of Olive to be dethroned. I have to say that there is no evidence that I know of that the paths of tese 2 females crossed in 2003. EJ was at the LG nest between 26 & 29 March, but was not seen again at LG until 16 June. Olive didn't arrive in 2003 until 6 April. The now world famous Henry arrived on 11th April and immediately started cxourtship feeding with Olive. He then had skirmishes with a number of male intruders, culminating in a very prolonged battle with 1 of the 4 (losing) males that had challenged for the territory in 2002. Henry won that battle, but within hours was challenged again and lost easily. The 'new male' then refused to provide food for Olive who eventually was forced to catch food for herself. She spent less and less time at the nest and sadly was last seen on 2nd May. She was not evicted, but left of her own accord. 9 days later Henry re-appeared, energy restored, kicked off the useless male only to find his female had, quite literally, flown the nest. Over the next few weeks two unringed females Faith and Hope put in brief appearances, but then disappeared. EJ, having been evicted from her own territory, almost certainly by Ollie's grand-daughter Green 7B, arrived back at LG on 16 June, by which time it was far too late for them to breed, but Henry, bless him, fed EJ.

EJ - I hope your honour has been restored. Its the least I can do after you arrived almost on time.

Some people think Ospreys are a matter of life and death. I don't like that attitude. I can assure them it is much more serious than that.

  • EJ, an osprey with a secret ...... well, rather a lot of secrets? I was telling a friend today that EJ was back. I also said that as far as I am aware, neither on any outbound, nor any return home migration flights, or during her 'winter' stay location or locations has she been seen (Positively Identified). I think that is correct. Any comments?

  • Hello to you CRINGER- my you've done your homework !! What a fascinating read.

  • Thanks C Ringer - EJ today is the most Loved Osprey now she has returned but back in 2003 things were different and as yet and as you have posted No one has challenged that posting of 3 January.

C Ringer you are a good defence lawyer for her.

  • I am so elated EJ is back and I have said that the Odin thread gets more posts and a brilliant dad he is. I I think sometimes EJ is overlooked and I have said it before.

A remarkable Osprey and a wonderful mother and she deserves recognistion and yes we do and sometimes only remember about Odin fishing. A thought all smiles. I am not saying no-one thinks the same but EJ is LG :)

  • EJ needs to have her recognistion and a wonderful Osprey she is and maybe we take her for granted. So happy she is back all

  • Thats funny B&B I always think poor Odin is the forgotten one as EJ is always there on camera along with the chicks. I think as you have said elsewhere they make a perfect couple.

Its great to watch her feeding the newly hatched chicks so gentle with tiny pieces of fish being offered :)

    A very old Shropshire Lad.

  • Cringer I have a serious question to you and I have enjoyed your posts however I am curious why you have brought up Keiths post 3 jan now. I am so disappointed that you have brought this up now. Why not then? and now 2 months later. I understand you saying it was not challenged before and know you will say it is appropriate now. NO WAY. Why challenge now and I am shocked.

Forgoodness sake, I am being honest I am shocked that someone can do that.

  • ChrisS You make me smile and the Odin thread is used so much lol

  • Hi Guys - so far as I am aware no-one has photographed EJ away from LG, so you are right jsb she is an osprey with secrets that are unlikely ever to be revealed.

Hi Cirrus, thank you - I didnt want to be rude , but sometimes if something is left unchallenged, then before you know it, it becomes accepted 'fact.'

Keith - I think the jury have no choice but to bring back a unanimous verdict - 'not guilty.' There is no evidence as charged.

I remember EJ taking that broken egg from the nest after her fight. I will never forget that moment. Heart-wrenching. I never take her for granted.
