Weekly Chat, Sunday, January 3, 2010!!

Hi all:  Here's to a problem-free week on the site.  Check out the last week's final page or so for updates from everyone, including one from Maureen (HillaryH) who's back with us after a hospital stay due to a chest infection and wants directions to Google Earth. Maureen - assume you downloaded GE before? If not, just go to http://earth.google.com/ and click on the Download Google Earth 5 button at right.  I can't remember right now how to load Rothes and Mallachie's route; perhaps someone else will let you know if you need additional info.  Glad you're back!

Alan posted a hummingbird link (http://vimeo.com/hummingbirds#8409299) for those who missed it and the week's chat ended with a long post from OG, who'd been composing it for days but was unable to get it on the site due to the techy problems!    And no OG, haven't attempted the printer-wireless problem yet; can only handle one techy problem at week it seems!!

Have a nice Sunday all. Let's see if this posts

  • Oh, Caerann: What a remarkable picture of that owl. Looks like cold accommodations to me!

  • Annette: So glad that your daughter had a good day. Sounds like everyone has found a satisfactory place for themselves at your house. Wish I was close enough to offer some help to you.

  • 'Twas too hot to sit over computer, tried sewing up knitting in coolest room, then went and slept away the afternoon. Adelaide has reached 40.8C, here only 39.7 with the sea breeze which has now dropped. Humidity 6%. Early tea as I am on standby for airport shuttle for Dau#1, due at 6.05 pm (or whenever). The beauty of being 5 mins from airport is no parking fees and I can wait at home . . . in the heat. I envy that owl LOL. Take care all. See you tomorrow.

  • AQ: I hope your daughter's return is smooth and uneventful. I could not stand that heat. I would whither away like your poor plants. Do drink plenty of fluids. I am sending all of our new snow to you. Hmmm, what would be the best way to ship snow?...

  • Caerann    Those pictures of the GHO are so cute. Between you and Diane you are going to get me interested in them. Up to now I have only known them as those birds you do not want to see anywhere near ospreys.

Are GHOs also known as eagle owls?

Way back in the eighties there was a software company that had an owl (I thing it was an eagle owl) as a logo. They had one for real and used to bring him/her along to the computer shows. The owl was the most enormous hit with the punters. People (including me) used to go along to their stall just to say hello to the owl. It was a lovely bird.

  • Morning all from TI

Sue C : Stunning photo of Loch Mallachie.

Caerann : Thanks for the GHO pic. It does not look like the warmest roost.

Emma Peel : I can well remember what snowy Dundee was like when the wind was off the North Sea. Makes me feel cold just thinking about it.

Everyone else : Thanks for your input, photos etc.

I have just been watching an eagle at store mosse in Sweden. It looks very snowy there also.

This morning when out with the Thunderdog I again saw a flock of fieldfares in the same place as yesterday in a hawthorn hedge next to an arable field. I have never seen them before yesterday and now 2 days in a row within 100 yards of my house.

    Weather: Overcast and gloomy, dry , Temp 0.3c , uncomfortably cold , Humidity 92% , Sunrise 08:08 , sunset 16:05.

  • Morning from the snowy NWest.  Still extremely cold here, Husband is just warming up the car which is the one with the best heater, to go forth & stock up in Sainsburys, which is a few miles from here but at least on a main route, once we get out of our own road! (that's the hardest bit!)  On the news this morning, we were told that at the weekend it will be really cold windchill & possibly more snow, so have decided to stock up some more in case we have to stay home for another week. Children have turned up today at the nearby High School so presume that at least some of the schools which have been closed all week(since Monday)  are now opening, or trying to.

Our milkman, who is a hero, has brought milk & eggs, and most important, more birdfood!  Have seen some of the above photos, but not time to read all, as dashing off now- take care All!

  • WOW!  That's a wonderful webcam, Alan. Thanks.

  • Monring Alan I managed to catch a glimpse as well but not sure how many eggs.

Freezing cold again and the long battle to defrost the bird baths is starting.  Managed to defrost them both yesterday and low and behold sparrows, blackbirds and startlings all took a good bath.  I have been watching the starlings and they are back in force.  Two were having a right old fight on the lawn.  No need to fight over the food as there is plenty for everyone.  I think it is just their nature to be quarrelsome. The pair of wagtails have found the worms and are tucking in and I have a lovely thrush visiting as well as blue tits and robins.  I also had a heron perched on the garage roof this morning.  We have a pond but fortunately we have covered one half with a board and the fish hide underneath.  Felt sorry for the heron though as it must be hard for them at the moment.

Keep safe and warm and have a good day.
