Loch Garten 2010

As we near the end of the year and the nights start to draw out again (thanks for pointing that out, Tiger) thoughts will inevitably start to turn to the coming season at LG. It is likely that we have less than 100 days to wait now. After such a successful year in 2009 what will 2010 hold for the most famous nest site in the UK?

Will EJ, after an uncharacteristically late departure, return early enough to claim the nest? Will the magnificent Odin make it back to partner EJ and to entertain us all again this year?

Post here to let us know what you hope and/or think will happen in the coming season (don’t forget we are viewing a fixed camera watching a single nest so we get to follow whoever successfully claims it). Who will return, and when? Will there be a struggle for the nest? etc, etc.

Predictions please!

Tiger & Diane: I'm interested to know why you think that White TF will not be a factor in the coming season. He/she took a particular interest in the nest after Mallachie was the last to leave, even rearranging the furniture before finally migrating.

Sandy:  I am not an osprey expert, like the others on this thread, so I'm a little out of my league. But I live in the woods, and I closely watch the life cycles of the birds here. At the end of the season, when White TF lingered at the LG nest,  I thought that his/her behavior seemed a little disoriented and erratic at times -- like the instinctual drives were a bit out of kilter due to illness or genetic weakness. Maybe it was just the bird's youth. I also thought s/he showed signs of being in a weakened condition, physically. I know that s/he was very feisty, but I have seen other birds/animals become sort of frantically obsessive when they are actually declining. Perhaps TF's reluctance to migrate was at least partially due to poor health. I may be way off base, but that was my impression at season's end.

  • Diane: I can assure you that I am definitely not an osprey expert!! I'm merely an osprey fan who, like many others here, is learning more about these fantastic birds all the time thanks to this site. At this stage none of us has any idea what will happen and this thread is all about speculation. I can assure you that your opinions are as valid as anybody else's. I agree that White TF's age will count against it if it makes it back and tries to claim this or any other nest.

  • Merry Christmas from white TF somewhere in Africa:

  • Thank you very much, Sandy! I appreciate that. I think you folks are amazing, though. I am always stunned by the amount of information you all have stored in your brains. You all have the equivalent of graduate degrees in Ospreyology. You should collaborate and write a book! (I know that the Roy Dennis book is wonderful, but you could write from a different perspective.)

  • Any more predictions before 2010 gets too old?

Hi Tiger, been very busy over the holidays but I for one will be making (probably wildly inaccurate) guesses at the arrival dates for EJ and Odin this year. There's plenty of time yet before they even start thinking of making the journey North (and if they heard about the current UK weather they'd think twice about it anyway!).

Yes, Tiger, I have a prediction for 2010:  Some ospreys will return to Scotland to nest, while regretably, others will not..  Some will raise broods successfully, while again, others will not.  Whatever happens, we will follow it all avidly, and we will all be on board for the emotional roller coaster ride right through the year.  ;-)

    Smiles, Jan.

  • Hi All

No predictions just hopes for a nest full of parents and chicks,  lochs and fish tanks full of fish. and long still days for easy fishing Hopefully it will be Ej and Odin at the helm, but I;m thinking maybe not. want to be wrong though,

I;m also hoping that when it comes to ringing, Roy Dennnis has three different colour rings in his pocket for easy ID on the nest.   Ok, Here;s a prediction , Two males and a female this year?

All I ask is the chance to prove that money can't make me happy.

  • Hi everyone.

I don't really have any predictions as such but I honestly can't wait for the ospreys to return.  This will be my first season watching the Loch Garten ospreys and I really hope that 2010 is a success like last year.

    Paul.

Warning!  This post contains atrocious spelling, and terrible grammar.  Approach with extreme edginess.

  • Can only agree with Wattle who says that we are all in for an emotional roller coaster ride again, when the birds return. I followed the nest from spring 2008 when the chicks were small, & have been gripped by stories more dramatic than any soap opera, ever since. Roll on Spring!!
