Blue XD

I guess that Blue XD is now set to be part of Loch Garten History. He deserves a page by himself.

Do people have data on his exact arrival time and some videos and pictures.

There has been a blog regarding him here on    28 Mar 2012 5:56 PM

There is still confusion as to his identity but he is said to be the long term partner of Green J   or otherwise known as  S06

So  Blue/White XD    may be     S18   but there are certain problems with that.

S06 and S18 also parented a chick translocated to Rutland viz.  T04

I wrote about  Green J    here    on 3 March 2012

Oh really, I hadnt picked up on that then.   She is another Beatrice then!  Talking about Beatrice she seems to be taking her time on the journey home.

On the contrary Beatrice is another Green J

In 1999 no one knew that birds overwintered in Spain until Green J was tracked. I remember the first tracking well. They set up the transmission pattern not knowing that she would leave early. By the time the signals turned on she was in Spain and had completed her migration.

See a picture of her on page 97 of "Life of ospreys"  and her nest on page 37

Also an account of her tracking on page 98

About the rings. See a bird with ring S0  on page 87 of "Life of Ospeys" by Roy Dennis

  • I've just done all of that TIGER - having only read Life of Ospreys once (so far) it was like reading it all for the first time and , because you put the sequence in order it was far more enjoyable for me. Thank you.  (Still prefer Philip Brown's book though - there is just something about it )

  • See what you mean Tiger, thanks for the page numbers I have the book beside me....

  • This is absolutely fascinating and I cannot see Blue XD going without a fight, he his doing his duties bringing fish and digging the nest bowl.

Fascinating stories all of these two Ospreys Blue XD and Green J.

    Odin must be back soon?

  • This was posted by Roy

At Loch Garten, the old female EJ was visited by blue/white XD - a male I ringed at Rothiemurchus fishery in 2000 - he's the mate of green/white J - the oldest pair in Strathspey. By chance I visited their nest today and found that it had fallen - XD had been adding sticks to a nearby tree - in next couple of days I'll check it out and build a good base to the nest for this long established pair.

Surely this is Roy confirming this is S18 (Black 8X)

  • Keith   You do not have to convince me.

Roy caught  S06  (Green J) three times. Twice to fit transmiters and once to remove one. Now there is no mention of catching S18 a second time in spite of him being tracked for two seasons. Did he have a solar powered transmitter?

His son T06 did carry a solar powered transmitter.

  • Surely "the oldest pair" is the clincher. This indicates that another Osprey has not usurped S18? I can only assume that in the last few years S18's ring has fallen off & Roy has managed to replace it alah Maroon AA/Blue AW.

Alternatively  Black 8X is a typo.

  • What we need now is one of the webcam watchers to read his BTO ring number - 1367816!!!!!! Suspect this would be problematic on the HD images from Rutland or Dyfi never mind the images from Loch Garten!!!
