Blue XD

So, as we expected - and end of an era!

I am so saddened to hear the sad news of Blue XD, particularly after his difficult year last year when his mate was ousted by a young, unringed female. It didn't sound good after we heard he was spending time near habitation. It just goes to show that even experienced birds can have problems. It is so sad.

Just picked up this news on FB. Sad so no serenading EJ this year (am I right he was the one she had a tryst with?)

I also read this awful news earlier on FB but having not realized there had been a problem I am shocked and upset, am I missing some more info as the blog says he died possibly in fishing net .. Has his body been found? I had hoped it might have been his transmitter failed and not this. :(

Such sad news about Blue XD especially at the beginning of the season, he will be missed at the Aviemore Lochan and Rothiemurchus as he was certainly well photographed there.      It shows that even experienced ospreys are vulnerable as well, and highlights that each and every bird that makes it back each year is to be applauded and appreciated. 

NiteOwl the only information so far is on RD's main page, which said on 25 February 2016:  "Blue XD died, probably in fishing nets or killed near a coastal village."

In RD's last post on XD's page, on 7 February he said "Data for first few days of February not certain but looks like he is around Diogue".  Diogue is in Senegal.

RD has not given any more information.  It may be there is no more to say. 

So very true, Mary.  XD had really become quite well known in his winter quarters.  Will Green J return?  That is an unknown at present.

Thanks Sheila, yes that's all the info I've seen. Perhaps in time more details will be given.

Very sad to read about the fate of Blue XD--he was an important part of Scotland's Osprey life, especially that of EJ, and loved by many Osprey followers.  A relative of mine always tries to find something positive in any problem or disaster, so in that light, perhaps this will take some of the pressure off Loch Garten's Odin if the males who tried to oust him from the Loch Garten nest will this year go off to fight over Blue XD's nest instead and leave EJ and Odin in peace, should we be so lucky as to have both of them return this year.
