Weekly Chat, 6th December 2009

See that Annette has been too busy perhaps, to start a new week, so I'm doing the honours. Rather wet in this part of the world this morning, so doing lots of tidying & Christmas preparing stuff.

I have seen eagle owls used for publicity before but ospreys??  Controversial. See http://www.oscarandolive.com/The_Book/Events.html

I thought that ospreys do not do well in captivity?

Tiger, if you go into the website in depth, you'll find that she talks about 'Olive and Oscar' being with her at all these events, then tells how many children took 'Olive and Oscar' home with them.  Obviously she is talking about the book!!! LOL! Tthe book is her observations of a wild osprey family who are neighbours of hers, presented in the form of a children's book.  She does mention the presence of a live osprey as a very special guest at one event.  When you think about it, there must be rescued osprey who cannot ,or don't want to, fend for themselves in the wild.  Hand-raised chicks would fall into this category.  For these birds, surely a life where they are well cared for and perform a useful service in educating people about ospreys is better than no life at all?

Oh thank you for that Jan. I did not read the website myself. I just took the word of Lisa the very lovely webmaster at the Blackwater osprey site. See http://puleston.osprey.bnl.org/MessageViewID2009.php?thread=58318&mess=0

Indeed as far as I know Blackwater had the very first osprey webcam on the internet back about 2001. It was just a picture every 15 minutes or so. Not quite so exciting as it is now.

The Blackwater cam is at http://www.friendsofblackwater.org/camhtm.html

  • LicW What a cutie he/she is.  Such a lovely face.  I always save all the photos to my pictures folder.  To do this just right hand click on the picture and you will get a drop down menu where you can just save it and giving it a name.  Sorry if you already know this but am trawling through nearly 200 email alerts so soneone might have already told you.

  • Morning Lindybird and thanks for your message.  I tried to reply but for some reason it would not go.  I am not at all worried about the comments received from a certain person.  It would take a lot more than that to upset me.  Just seems a shame that whoever it is wants to be like that.  Was so nice of Richard to post a blog explaining yet again everything we need to know.  What patience he has.  Have a good day anyway.

  • Careann, hope whatever it is works out OK:) Sending positive thoughts westwards for you. Come back when you can.

Liz LFW, what a cute hedgehog:) We don't get them here so it is lovely to see again. Do you still have him/her? On the favourites, when you get to the page/website you want to save, depending on what browser you are using, you should have a "favorites"/Bookmarks" button. Click that and it will ask you do you want to save it. Say yes and then you can organise your links how you want.. Then to get back to it, click on the same button and then the link you want.

AQ/Wattle, very interesting about the family history. Computers must make it a lot easier.

Alan, good luck with the lights.

Tiger, all great info. I'm looking forward to the eagles coming back at Blackwater which can't be too long.

Annette, what a busy day and if I need house stuff, you can't beat Target! What a healthy lunch that is.

Much quieter day here. Temp about 1 and blue sky but trending colder.

  • Exciting thought Tiger. A new season will be upon us before we know it. Your idea of a countdown clock sounds great.

AQ has been a lot of help to me in finding more information about my South Australian ancestors, for which I shall be eternally grateful.  I've only been working on my family tree since early this year, but it is very addictive, and I am well and truly HOOKED!!!  I spend at least some time every day chasing 'dead rellies' around my computer, and I have found more live rellies than I ever dreamed I had!!!

Oh I am a big fan of family trees too. I managed to get back to the 18th century with mine.

Any recommendations on what software to use for recording your results? The Irish 1911 census went online recently and that has been ever so helpful.

Yes indeed. Mind you with tracking we can see them moving early. Not Nimrod of course. He is a real "take a few more days holiday" sort of bird. I often wonder if Henry and Nimrod are related.

Yes that is true. Pity they aren't all tracked, that would be good. LOL yes, Henry and Nimrod are like peas from the same pod aren't they?

  • Hi Chloe:)

Tiger, I'm sure a man of your abilities could come up with a countdown clock? I seem to remember you did one on the Facebook side last year?
