Welcome to a new week. How time flies - not long to wait, next month our osps return

  • Thanks AQ for starting us off and for a lovely sequence of pics of the honeybird.

Alan - nice to know about the Alcoa eagle and the others, no-one at home at Norfolk.

OG - I think I may have caused some confusion over the meal - it was just a reckie for next Friday  but did enjoy the trip out.

Couple of shots coming up of Phoebe, and just about see the chicks.  Also of Dunedin female and the male attempting to mate but seemed to be in the wrong position!!

after that I must have a wash and brush up!

  • Hi, folks. I've been busy since 5:00 a.m. this morning, and I just haven't found the time to get on here and do some replies. Now I'm tired and headed for bed, but I wanted to just stop in and say hello to everyone. HELLO! I'll try to pop back in here in the morning.

It looks like you all are freezing! I do hope the weather turns warmer for all of you. It's also been very cold here, and we have a bit of snow lying on the ground.Think positively, though. It's just a little over a month until the Spring Equinox!!!

    ------

I did want to post one thing. This is a spectacular video. I know that Annette will like it, and I think others will, too. Scientists have recently been observing a very peculiar behavior between dolphins and humpback whales near the Hawaiian Islands.

Here's what happens: A dolphin gently lies down on the head of a humpback whale. The whale then carefully lifts the dolphin high into the air, and it slides tail-first down the whale's head and body, splashing back into the water.  The dolphins repeatedly line up to take the wild ride down the whales' heads, and the whales seem to enjoy lifting them out of the water.

Researchers are amazed at what looks like joyful play between the two species!

    ------

Speaking of whales, Annette, good luck with the whale count! Lindy: When are you leaving on your trip? I hope your OH is much better, and you two can enjoy your holiday. AQ: I've enjoyed your photos. Lovely honeyeater! OG: Glad you made it to church, and that someone bought your surplus owls! Patriciat: Hope your OH is recovering from the shingles, and your vertigo is lessening. Stay warm, Alan, Brenda, Lynette, Heather, and all; it's almost spring!!!

I'll read more posts tomorrow. Take care, everyone.

  • Evening all:

Tiger: Saw the ISS this evening - and thank you again. The clouds had moved in but it was clear immediately overhead and to the north. The ISS was very bright - sun had set an hour before; amazing to see it so high and above all the normal traffic flying back and forth. I wonder if airline pilots pay attention to it....

Diane: What a wonderful Spring photo!  Glorious!  Those photos of the dolphins and whales are amazing. We have both offshore here. I've never seen or heard of anything like it. I've heard many tales of new gray whale mothers showing off their calves to human visitors to the Mexican lagoons, but nothing like this. Thanks so much for passing it on. I'll have to mention it to Mike at GWC (Gray Whales Count).  I'm not sure we'll be counting tomorrow - we've got a wind advisory and wind is the most disruptive weather condition when it comes to the survey. Fingers crossed the wind won't be that bad!

Thanks all for pix and posts! :-)

  • Oh my! Two solid hours of Downton Abbey tonight!  The Spanish Flu strikes; Cora survives; Lavinia doesn't; Sybil heads for Gretna Green with the chauffeur, Jane leaves;  Bates and Mary get married, Bates is arrested, and much, much more. It's, well, almost action-packed!!  But will Mary and Matthew ever get together?  Apparently not in this season!  :-))

  • Good Morning.   Still cold, but not bitterly cold and still as it has been for a while. No mist across the fields either, so my OH pointed out a circling gliding group of Buzzards - six! in the distance as he gazed out of our conservatory window.  We have seen as many as four in a group before, last year, so wonder if the young 'uns of those unions are now joining in.

Thanks to Diane for the cheery card!  and to everyone for the lovely bird pics. (will investigate your link later, Diane, when I have more time).

Annette:  There are a lot more dramas to come for the Downton residents. I do love looking at the clothes they wear, & the jewellery.

Sad news of Whitney Houston's death but a lesson perhaps to those who dabble in these terrible drugs that there is an awful price to pay. Watched the BAFTAS last night and enjoyed the speeches - Stephen Fry on good form as the host, and some good and short speeches by the stars.  Not surprised at the nominations nor the winners of the coveted awards. As Colin Firth rescued Meryl Streep's shoe which she lost in transit, and they exchanged kisses and hugs, I realised that of course they are old friends from working together on "Mamma Mia".

Off to the dentist for a checkup this morning, and my OH for another session with chiropractor.  We meet together later to pick out one of those 'all in' deals for tomorrows Valentines Day so that we can eat in and have a glass of wine or two without worrying about getting back home again.

Meanwhile, here are your Monday Smiles as usual:   surprising things which folks have on their doormats!! ~

~  ~  more next week!  (I go away on the 22nd)

  • ps.   Very sad to hear of the riots and injuries in Greece:  we love the Greek people, they are so friendly and warm, and they love to party.

  • No mist or fog here this morning – and pleased to see Linda say there is none where she is, as I was thinking OH and J might meet some down Manchester way!  The sun came through brightly at about 9am, and temp is currently 8°C.  Had to close blind here in the study because it is so bright.  Been busy since they left at 8am, so having a sit down with some coffee – sorted some papers, loaded dishwasher and washed up other things – and even done half the ironing!  Enjoyed church service last evening – Minister’s Father (a sort of free-lance minister), visiting for the weekend, preached and was really good.  Went to bed early to be up early today.

Annette – I hope too that you Sister’s boiler lasts the winter – but I think even Lincolnshire will soon be warmer!

Brenda – I hope the rain today at least starts the thaw for you.  When we had our one Brambling earlier in the winter he was also with the Chaffinches.

Lynette – sorry, I had assumed the recce included trying out their food!  Anyway, I hope it will be good next weekend!

Diane – sorry that you are sooo busy – but I guess the work is what you need!  Sorry, too, that it is cold with snow, but at least that’s seasonal – we are back to above average temps here this week!  That Whale and Dolphin interaction is amazing – thank you for spotting that report and sharing with us.  Thanks also for yet another lovely bright flower!

Linda – great to see groups of Buzzards like that – lovely birds to see in any number – I always watch out for them around here.  We had a noisy weekend from the geese!  When there is mist or fog, their evening return to the merse is accompanied by much more than the usual honking by some individuals – they all seem to have to add their voices to the cocophony to make sure they stay together!  I hope appointments went well this morning, and you have your supplies in for tomorrow!  Thanks for the weird doormats!

    Back later.

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Lindy: Love those welcome mats. I want the first one! LOL! I absolutely hate it when people drop in on me!

  • Morning all,

Linda : Thanks for the monday smiles. Could do with the 3rd one here at times. Great seeing all those buzzards.

OG : Temps gradually rising here but still not up to the average for this time of year. It is currently 4.7c and still lots of horrible piles of melting snow everywhere.

Lynette : Thanks for the Phoebe pics. I was going to post some but can hardly see the chicks at the moment in that nest.

Thanks to everyone else for the chat etc.

Lady P has gone to the doctors as her face is still paining her. Hopefully the letter will be back from the hospital and she can get another appointment with a neurologist fairly soon.

Will have to prioritise which nests to keep up with soon as eagle eggs being laid everywhere now and it will soon be the peregrines turn and then the ospreys.
