Hallo folks. Not much action yesterday afternoon on last week's chat, though SueC quoted a poem by the Wolof fishermen of Senegal about ospreys, which I found reassuring.
Original Goldfinch, poor you! Getting the right workers makes such a difference to having work done. About 5 years ago we put a single-storey extension - room and bathroom, so it could become an ensuite bedroom if OH can no longer manage stairs. We were fortunate in that we got a building firm for which we had good recommendations and they looked after all the sub-contractors. I don't know how you are coping at all, you are great! I suggest we all try thinking very positive thoughts for you. Not surprised you are fed up.
I hope all those in flood-prone areas are safe and well. And have the pantry well-stocked so they don't have to brave the roads. What cheek - if you've been flooded before, you can't get flood insurance!!!! How about only flood insurance for those who live on top of a hill? I tried to imagine 8 feet of water in our street. I am feeling more myself today (that bad! LOL) with the cooler weather.
OG - How horrible. It's enough to make one want to leave "well" alone and not renovate.
Caerann - Thanks for the bald eagle cam slide show. Makes me appreciate even more what we see on these webcam
Annette - Don't even think about how many pounds you put on while preparing the choc cream pie, what with sampling & licking the spoon & . . . .
Just heard the 8 am news with warnings of bushfires across New South Wales. I hope Wattle is OK. 3 homes lost in Tasmanian fires. SA's fires are mostly under control - over 100 were started by lightning.
Patriciat: This is actually a firm who did some good work for us when we needed changes when we moved in, and they were great! All the men are employees, apart from the sub-contracted electrician, who is good anyway. I think now they have too many contracts promised at the same time and they seem to move the guys on before they are finished. I really am surprised that on a job costing this much, the project manager should appear on the scene form time to time; communicating just by 'phone with us and the men is not satisfactory.
Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!
I am not saying this company are "cowboys" - it's just that eveything we try to do goes wrong, but this has seemed to go more wrong than most! I'm actually thinking of having them to do the other bathroom some time, because at least we know what can go wrong! And to some extent we shall have a hold over them and they'll have to get things right first time - surely!??!
Nice that all here think of others in difficulties. Wattle, I couldn't sleep with those temperatures, not surprised you are wilting. Flooding must be awful, but I would hate to have to worry about fires as you do.
AQ, yes, I can definitely feel the waistband tightening as I read that fantastic recipe! Sadly OH can't eat choc (migraine-inducing) so I shall have to eat it all myself...or maybe I should wait until I have visitors.
Thanks for bald eagle link Caerann, since so many of us turned out to be one we should all feel quite at home watching!
OG, hope you get those men sorted out, I can't believe it's 5 weeks since they started. I should think they would work well for you if you gave them another job after this!
Terry in Cumbria
I really am so sorry that things have gone so wrong with your wet room. I just hope you haven't paid them too much money as yet. As you say, just close the door and give yourself time to think and discuss with your OH. Have a good nights sleep.
evenin all:)
Been busy all day, enjoyed all the chat I've just caught up on but can't remember who posted what!! (my age I think)
AQ, I do remember the recepe though!! Thanks and we WILL be trying that out:) Hope you and Wattle are OK those fires are bad.
Just read about that poor policeman who died. How awful and how terrible for everyone affected. My thoughts go out to them.
OG, sorry about your tribulations as well. Not good:(
Anyway, just dashing off again so catch up later:)
OG: Aaack! How frustrating! Sounds like you've had everyone and their brother there working on it - next it'll be 10 pipers piping. Thing is: The folks who did my Long Beach kitchen and laid the Devil's Causeway instead of a smooth tile countertop had previously done my bathroom in that house - and did a very good job. So you never can tell.
Well, the city's leafblower brigade apparently spent yesterday at the Rose Garden. The aim was to clean the leaves out of the middle of those beds that have become overgrown - we normally rake them, but a lot of volunteers have packed it in for the season. Sounds good, but then the city's crew left everything that they couldn't handily clean up in one swipe (which looks like most of it) all around the edges of the beds, which is the one place they ask us to keep neat. Oh well.
Wow. So folks who've previously filed flood insurance claims can't get more insurance? (Sounds like the US healthcare system - but I'd better say no more!)
Off for a soothing cuppa with friend.
sorry about the mess you have to clear up Annette. You are doing a great thing
Hope you enjoyed the cuppa. Off to bed now (gone 9pm......)
Happy Saturday everyone
