Weekly Chat, Sunday November 15, 2009

Hallo folks. Not much action yesterday afternoon on last week's chat, though SueC quoted a poem by the Wolof fishermen of Senegal about ospreys, which I found reassuring.

  • Another frustrating day, no tiler till next Monday (that'll be week 6!) and the cleaner couldn't find anyone to send - when she asked the lady she had in mind, she actually told her she won't be working for her any more!!  So she's also very upset - and her arm sounds really bad.  She has said she will understand if we choose to try to find somebody else - such a shame, she was a real worker!

Anyway, OH has been busy tidying the greenhouse, and then cleaned the other shower room.  I have been sticking the inserts in the Christmas cards and the labels on the envelopes.  He's now out at a meeting, so I'm just pootling about!!  Solway floodwatch has been reinstated - very windy already but rain not heavy - yet!!

Got to go to Dumfries tomorrow (don't like going out in rain - I am so slow that I get wetter than the average person, but I made an appointmnet so have to do it) to start preparations to order my new Motability car.  Doing it the easy way - not even looking at different manufacturers, just returning to the same dealer to see what the new models are like.  I don't drive myself, so OH has the list of essential features and preferences.

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • 7.25 am. I’m getting in early today before I melt. So far 20 C and 58% humidity. Well yesterday's max was only 39 in Adelaide. But coming home on the non-a/c bus I could have howled, I was so hot and tired and fed up. . . I felt just like a small grizzly child. Spare a thought for Port Augusta where it was 46. They & some parts of the NW had the first "catastrophic" fire warning day. Schools were closed and everyone on alert in those areas yesterday. Thankfully nothing serious happened. Three idiots chose today for morning coffee. One has been away house-sitting for months. Time to catch up. As we live on E, NE & W of city we have chosen a central cafe in N suburb!!! Last time someone said how nice it would be to sit outside. Not today with 43 C predicted. As I said idiots. No point postponing, it will probably be hot on the next day we choose.

Wattle  - I hope you have had some respite. Annette & Gary – It is unusual to have such a long spell of hot weather in November. Jan & Feb yes, but this is early. Nov is the month of final exams. I remember doing public exams 50 years ago at the Showgrounds. Some accommodated in Centennial Hall, the rest in the Motor Pavilion. The latter a huge galvanised iron shed. We survived and we passed exams! Annette – keep up the silly spells – they keep me distracted. Caerann – What’s wrong with leaves, sez I. I love the scatter of leaves on the lawn and piled under the trees. Deciduous are only for a short time; our eucalypts drop all year round. I knew an old lady who spent her day sweeping every leaf, bark, gumnut that fell. Never-ending. Admittedly the round gumnuts are dangerous underfoot on paths. Margobird – Stay upright – you can see more LOL. Annette – I hope that wasn’t your house we saw in the news last night when a crane fell on it. Renovations needed indeed.

I took the quiz – a snowy owl – perhaps because there was no way I was going to tick I liked hot weather !!!!!! Must check those books listed. Sound veerrrry interesting. Auntie – I can’t imagine what 3 C would be like. OG - I wish we could even out these weather conditions. Take care.

  • OK, so I'm a snowy owl. Here is my best snap taken at the Kingussie Wildlife Park. If looks could kill . . .

  • Oh AQ, what a beautiful owl! I'm with you, I like the leaves but the lawn guy doesn't so I keep him out of my flower beds.  lol!

I saw a pair of pretty Barred Owls at a nature preserve in Florida and I thought they looked so sweet together:

  • Auntie, I too enjoyed your phrase about 2 dusks. Summed it up perfectly:)

TerryM, I did find that forum but I have had a busy couple of days in the agrden (I daren't say doing what..) so will post in a day or so (I am a little wary of crashing straight in there as well!!) The photo's that I saw were amazing.

Enjoyed the other chat but couldn't add to it so didn't:)

  • Caerann - Lovebirds !!!!!!!!!!!

  • I know I always say it but that is HOT AQ. Coffee???? Surley (shirley?) an iced coffee or ice cream

Lovely photo of the owl, and yours as well Caerann

  • I agree Gary it is HOT. 8.45 am and already 27 C. No it won't be hot coffee. My computer is complaining. Time to shut down.

  • Caerann - love the picture of the barred owls!

You seem to read such a lot of very deep books.  I used to read a lot, but not so much now, since OH retired.

He got back home at 9pm, so we've "battened down the hatches" for the night - wind is trying to blow various extractor fans inwards instead of out!!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Evening/Morning all:

Lindybird: Glad I wasn't the only one having problem with the RSPB server yesterday; seems to be okay now. Congrats on your successful Christmas shopping mission and only half a naughty slice of cake.  Watcjhed about 1/2 hour of the new Prisoner series last night, but didn't stay with it. Ian McKellen is great in anything; but the other cast members were all too pretty and the hero not as cool as Mr. McGoohan!

Alan: Tried to watch the buzzard video but could see only 7 seconds at a time before it started buffering, which lasted about 7 seconds, then back to video for another 7 seconds, etc., etc.  Looked like it might have been interesting.  Did anyone else have that problem?

OG: What a shame about the tiler - and the cleaner too!  At least you've got the Christmas cards under control. Good luck shopping for the new vehicle.

AQ: Weather sounds AWFUL. Is it worth investing in a/c throughout the house? Do you have an a/c car?  Hope the three idiots survived coffee!  :-)  (Iced with whipped cream I hope.) The house that got sliced with the crane is up in Santa Rosa - an hour northeast of San Francisco. What a mess!  Would hate to own the business that operated that crane!  Snowy owl doesn't look happy at all, poor thing.

Caerann: Loved the Barred Owls, all snuggled together.

Gary: Hope Ernest and Hemingway did a good job on the garden.

Our 20% chance of rain was postponed; now they're saying Friday, but I suspect it'll swing north of us again.

    Take care all.
