Weekly Chat, 29 January 2012

Greetings from a hot (28C) sticky (61% humidity) Sunday in Adelaide. Check back to page 13 of last week's chat if you missed the whale or bird videos. Thanks Diane & Chloe.

As I suspected would happen, Dau returns too late to collect or receive Jasper this eve, so I shall deliver HRH tomorrow after my Physio appt. Latter is to strengthen muscles to assist knee recovery. Huh, all it seems to be doing is to make knees even more sore than usual. I shall persist. Sermon this morn had some appropriate words to encourage me, about not fearing change to make things better.

My memories of the Aurora Australis (Southern Lights) that I saw as a child was of blue & pink. Yet most pics are of green. Hence I was pleased to see some non-green Aurora. My memory isn't failing LOL.

  • Evening all:

AQ: Thanks for starting us off. Hope Jasper is safely back home by now and that you are more relaxed (and cooler). Glad the sermon was inspiring; keep up with those exercises!

Diane: Thanks for the heads up on Big Miracle. I'll keep an eye out. Hope you met that deadline.

MaryGK: Yes, we count whales from a bluff with a good view to the southeast and approaching whales.  Have great binocs with a compass and reticle scale (the latter measures the distance from the horizon) so we can share exact location of sightings with other volunteers. We then track the whales as they head north past the point. The calf counts were very low 2007 through 2010 but jumped to 120 in 2011, with 719 adults during hours on site. The website is http://www.graywhalescount.org.  Humpbacks are present throughout the season; they tend to hang about and go back and forth while the gray whales head steadily north without much deviation.

ChloeB: That video is a hoot!

    NiteOwl: Hallo!

Lindybird: I was at a nice consignment store a couple of days ago that was full of some lovely china, glassware, etc. - everything was marked down, including the Wedgewood.

OG: Great that the book sale was a success!  Dirty iron sounds like a good reason to abandon the task and go back to the jigsaw.

Heather: Good luck with the DP and don't forget to guzzle some alcohol yourself.

BrendaH: Self parking? Oh my - I don't know if my friend even knows she has it. Her Prius has a solar panel in the roof which, according to friend, keeps the car cool even when it's parked (but she's only just figured out how to empty her cell phone's voicemail so not too sure if she's correct about the solar panel).  Thanks, daughter's back is improving; just hope she doesn't get too confident....

patriciat: Your Aurora sighting sounds wonderful; what a thrill that must've been. Goodness, operating a hydraulic lift sounds challenging - is it mobile enough to move if OH falls in different places? So sorry to hear about your daughter; assume she doesn't live with you?

Will finish up roses tomorrow and do some other tidy up around the garden. Have heard from a neighbor that the previous owners of our house are in town visiting family and are dying to come by and see the remodeling we've done. Have passed on the word that they're welcome to pop in, so must to a quick clean up in the a.m. (hide the ironing; empty the dish drainer, toss out droopy flower arrangements, remind OH to put down lid on toilet, etc...). Have a good Sunday all!

  • Woken at 6:45 by two enormous sneezes – coughing followed so got up for a cup of coffee.  Not going back to bed at this hour, so catching up on Chat and webcams.

Bjane – it sounds as if weekends are your busiest times and work gives you some relief from the care-giving role.  So sorry that your OH falls like that – and how awful that you had to pay for the hoist to lift him.  So sad about your Daughter too – and many years for you as a carer.  You must be a very strong and brave character – I’m full of admiration for you!

AQ – thanks for starting our new week.   Sorry the humidity is so high along with the heat.  So, an extra morning administering the dreaded cat-pills!  I hope your physio goes well – I didn’t get that, but am sure it is worth it, to assist with the exercises after the op – and you must persist with those when the time comes; I was rather lazy with mine (being unwell at the time) then screamed with pain when the physio tried to exercise the joint for me!  Good that the Sunday sermon was helpful to your situation.

Annette – J’s iron works much better than mine, so when/if he moves away I shall try to get myself one the same – ironing was almost a pleasure!  I think you have mixed up Bjane and Patricia in the middle of your post – two falling OHs!  Pleased your Daughter’s back is showing improvement – will she get any more of the injections?  That’s quite a challenge, having previous owners call by to see the remodelling – and I loved the list of things to do before they come!

Well, others will be waking soon.  Think I’ll go marinade some lamb for Sunday lunch and hard-boil some eggs for tea!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Thanks for starting us off AQ.

Just finished my garden birdwatch and submitted my results, nothing unusual to report but saw a variety totalling 24 birds.

Annette ~ Thanks for the info re the whale count and the link to the website, its such a interesting thing to be involved in, I would love to do something like that.    Those bino's sound like they are top notch, just amazing.

  • Morning, All.    Thanks to AQ for starting us off again.  Frosty here again and a white lawn to greet us on rising.

My OH has had a really bad night  (he watched the whole of "Oklahoma" at 3 in the morning to relieve the boredom.)  I didn't sleep very well, for worrying about him, so the two of us are a sorry sight today - we had a quiet day planned anyway so will just slob around, and do our bit for the Garden Birdwatch, later.

Will try to put on some replies later:  just off to find some funny pics for tomorrows Monday Smiles, and then wash my hair which feels like two hedgehogs having a fight over a windfall apple....

  • Good Morning to ALL - Wishing everyone another good week, and hope any with various problems all the best. ;)

  • Good Morning, 3c when we went to church. No frost, as we had rain and cloud last night. 4.2c now.

AQ, Thanks for starting the week. You may have guessed that your daughter would be too late to pick up Jasper. I can visualise Jasper laughing that he would enjoy tormenting you when you tried to give him his tablets just once more. Good that you could relate to the sermon. Ours was so boring this morning that I realised that he had finished and I had missed most of it. Then we finished with a familiar hymn but with a completely new tune, which nobody knew. Some brave people tried but it was terrible. Our church is small, so no choir, but we can sing quite well if we know the tune.

Annette, I can't wait to hear if your previous house owners arrive. I did laugh at your list of things to do before they arrive. It would be interesting to watch their faces and not what they say. It could feel as bad as when you are trying to sell your house.

OG, What a rude awakening for you this morning. Sorry the lingering cough is still disturbing you. I am hoping that mine has finally gone.

Linda, Sorry that your OH is still suffering so much. Hope you manage to try and have a sleep sometime today. I did laugh at your description of how your hair feels.

I am watching the tennis as I type. One set all at the moment.

  • Watching the tennis too ....  this is an epic match.

Hi to NiteOwl, who has only joined us recently.  I'm sure you are not the only Yorkshire girl on here!  (I'm in Cheshire)   When our dear Ospreys return once again, the excitement builds up on here like mad, and we all start  joining in on threads relating to the webcam.  You will enjoy it!!

  • Hi Lindybird - Yes I'm looking forward to it! I watched LG and kept up reading the DU last year as well as watching Lady at LotL last2yrs!  Nothing in the house will ever get done AGAIN!! LoL Since joining the forum I find more threads to read and reply my bit to, will life ever be the same again I ask!!!! LOL!!!!! NO....

  • PS - But it is lovely to meet so many like minded and heart felt people who share a common love of wildlife and these special birds the Osprey! They may be prediters but are so gentle and missunderstood, yes I feel sorry for the fish, but they cause no harm to anything else, Aut- Watch the Osprey even fed other birds its catch, I'm sure you all saw it. ;)

  • That was brilliant to watch. They must be incredibly fit.

I was listening to footballers yesterday who were complaining about having to play two matches in a week. They should try playing 11 hours of fast superb tennis in a few days like Djokovic has just done.
