HAPPY NEW WEEK!

News for This Week: Scientists can change the past!

You MUST look at this! Scientists are developing a "time cloak" that could change the past. Seriously! The "time cloak" hides an event in time, making it seem like it never actually happened.

It's called "temporal cloaking", and it makes an event disappear by sending it into a "time hole" where the observer can't see it. It's like cutting a few frames out of a movie and splicing the film back together without them. A first demonstration of a time cloak recently took place at Cornell University, U.S. Now, that is spooky. The full explanation is HERE. You can see a video animation HERE.

The Russian spacecraft Phobos-Grunt was launched on 8 November but failed to boost itself out of Earth's orbit, and whatever remains of the big fella is expected to crash back to Earth today (Sunday). The Russian government predicts the crash time to be:

21:51 GMT
9:51 p.m. U.K.
4:51 p.m. EST U.S.
3:51 p.m. CST U.S.
1:51 p.m. PST U.S.

They believe that the fragments may fall into the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Chile. Phobus-Grunt is carrying 11 tons of very toxic propellent. Experts predict that the fuel tanks will create a massive explosion high above Earth, releasing the fuel to burn up in Earth's atmosphere. The vaporized fuel will re-condense into small particles that may remain in the upper atmosphere. The material is said to be "exotic", and it's unclear how it will continue to affect the chemistry in that region of the atmosphere.

The spacecraft was also carrying a module containing a set of live micro-organisms. The bio-module was designed to survive re-entry, and it's not clear where all the little critters will end up! I figure they'll be transformed into mutant aliens!!!!!

Everyone have a good week!!!

  • Just realised I have missed off OG:  do hope you are 'feeling more the thing' as they used to say. You have had such a busy time lately and seem to have started the year off badly.

dibnlib:    Thanks for the film review of 'Warhorse'   - my Friend and I decided not to go & see it, as we would blub all the way through!  We made a joint decision to watch it at home sometime, when no one will see us with our tissues.

  • Lindy: I think some of the Roland Rat memorabilia is worth some money. See here. I read somewhere that the Roland Rat pottery can really bring a lot of money. :-)

dibnlib: I forgot to say thank you for your description of your Alaska glacier holiday. It sounded wonderful. I would love to hear the glaciers. It would also be so much fun to see the sea otters. Fabulous!

  • Thanks DIANE - will investigate - dont expect he is worth a fortune!

  • Well, home alone today – but enjoyed a lovely hour-long phone call this afternoon!  Didn’t do much all day as I was a bit wobbly this morning, but ok now and caught up with washing up pots, emptying dishwasher and ironing – and of course had meals!  OH and J will be home soon from Manchester, but going back in 10 days time.

Alan – pleased Hamish managed his breakfast before he went back to bed!  Not a very nice day here, either – 6c degrees and drizzling on and of (mostly on) all day.  Had a large flock of Goldfinches this morning, which brightened my day as they stayed and fed for quite a long while, flew off and circled round, then came back for second helpings!  I hope your visitors had a reasonable journey and that you all enjoyed their visit.

Margo – sorry the Internet connection is giving you further problems.  I guess your OH is helping people meet tax deadlines, but not good that he has to work Sundays.

Joan – pleased that your OH is home and doing well – sorry about the pain, I hope the painkillers work and that you both get some sleep.

Lynette – I see Jewel’s DenCam will be down while they make some transmission improvements – her labour has brought back memories of wee Hope, as it was during her birth to Lily two years ago that I first started watching the Black Bears.

Dibnlib – we shall catch up with EarthFlight eventually!

Linda – taken OH to the shops again?  That’s twice this year, poor man!  When you clear the bottom of the wardrobe, you aren’t supposed to fill it up again!!  Good luck getting Roland Rat valued!  I thought Queen memorabilia was supposed to have some value, but the original Night At The Opera LP was only quoted at £6 to buy – so obviously less to sell - so giving it to Son-in-Law, less effort than selling!  I am fine really, and even better now that OH and J have just arrived home!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • OG: I'm glad to hear that you're doing better today, after a wobbly start. Don't try to do too much. I thought of you this morning. We had a bone-chilling cold night. When I went out to take the bins down the driveway lane, I startled two American Goldfinches who were huddled under a loose piece of siding up against my house. That particular area is where the heat rises up from a furnace register indoors, so the wall must have been very warm. The goldfinches came bursting out and almost ran into my legs as they flew away.

Haven't seen R.T. Hawk today, although I looked around for him. He may have been off hunting. I did hear both of the Pileated Woodpeckers, so that's a relief. I may not get back on here later. We're under a Winter Storm Advisory for tonight for sleet, ice, and snow. I'm not in any danger; the worst that could happen to me is a brief power outage if the ice accumulates. I'm making a big pot of lovely hot chipotle vegetable soup and whole wheat biscuits (American type not British), and I'm going to take it easy and watch Netflix movies, tv, and documentaries tonight. I may brew a pot of old-fashioned, strong Folger's coffee. I saw that Netflix is now available in the U.K. Do any of you have it?

    Everyone have a great weekend!!!

  • DIANE _ Hey, if I were an American Goldfinch, I could come and live in a warm spot against your house!  I'd like that - but then I wouldn't be able to see my European Goldfinches, so perhaps not.

Sorry about approaching storm.  Hope you can keep warm and enjoy the soup and movies without loss of power.  Stay safe!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Diane – I also liked "Under the Dome".
11/22/63 is another long book. Where does he get his imagination? A rare
short book of Stephen King’s that is extremely good is “The Girl who
Loved Tom Gordon”. I listened to the audiobook and have lent it out to friends
going on road trips. They loved it and several sat in side streets when they
reached their destinations because they hadn’t finished the book yet! Ann Heche
is the narrator and her rough tomboyish voice was perfect for the character in the book.
Annette – beautiful picture of two beautiful girls!
I never got used to the heat in Phoenix. I have always loved the change of seasons and when my OH
asked if I was interested in moving back to Iowa I didn't hesitate to answer yes.
I hope everyone who is ill, injured or in pain has a miraculous recovery!
P.S. We have had another 2 ½ inches of snow on top of our 5 ½ and are in the middle of another
    storm today.  5 inches expected.
Don't know why the spacing has gone all crazy in this post.....oh well......
  • Looking in again.  See everyone seems to be OK, OG recovering, and the rest of you doing day to day things.  Took the following pics earlier this evening - one of the feeding station in South America,   one of Jewel again, seems restless so maybe not so long now to the birth.

  • Another polar Arctic species mysteriously decides to migrate south to the mainland U.S., where it behaves oddly: Rare ribbon seal

  • YES PLEASE Diane, do send cold weather. Our week ahead has 33-36 C predicted <bleah> Have you seen the artist's impression released by the European Space Agency showing the 1000s of objects in orbit around the earth? Mind-boggling. EDIT - Pic was in our newspaper.

Dau's cat has been demoted again as they have acquired 2 guinea pigs. This is Jasper trying to keep cool in the shade on the patio paving on Thurs when it was only 32 C.
