HAPPY NEW WEEK!

News for This Week: Scientists can change the past!

You MUST look at this! Scientists are developing a "time cloak" that could change the past. Seriously! The "time cloak" hides an event in time, making it seem like it never actually happened.

It's called "temporal cloaking", and it makes an event disappear by sending it into a "time hole" where the observer can't see it. It's like cutting a few frames out of a movie and splicing the film back together without them. A first demonstration of a time cloak recently took place at Cornell University, U.S. Now, that is spooky. The full explanation is HERE. You can see a video animation HERE.

Also...

The Russian spacecraft Phobos-Grunt was launched on 8 November but failed to boost itself out of Earth's orbit, and whatever remains of the big fella is expected to crash back to Earth today (Sunday). The Russian government predicts the crash time to be:

21:51 GMT
9:51 p.m. U.K.
4:51 p.m. EST U.S.
3:51 p.m. CST U.S.
1:51 p.m. PST U.S.

They believe that the fragments may fall into the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Chile. Phobus-Grunt is carrying 11 tons of very toxic propellent. Experts predict that the fuel tanks will create a massive explosion high above Earth, releasing the fuel to burn up in Earth's atmosphere. The vaporized fuel will re-condense into small particles that may remain in the upper atmosphere. The material is said to be "exotic", and it's unclear how it will continue to affect the chemistry in that region of the atmosphere.

The spacecraft was also carrying a module containing a set of live micro-organisms. The bio-module was designed to survive re-entry, and it's not clear where all the little critters will end up! I figure they'll be transformed into mutant aliens!!!!!

Everyone have a good week!!!

  • Thanks Diane for starting us off with all that good (?) news. I wouldn't mind skipping an event or two (can I blot out my surgery?), but all those little aliens invading us!!!!!!

I had to laugh at Alan's "Very cold here this morning with current temp at minus 3.3c." This early morning  was chilly (?) with a mere 14 C. Now, mid pm, a pleasant 24.

G-son was returned home, having had a lesson from OH in programming for websites. G-son expected to design a complicated thingie like one of his computer games already so soon. What's wrong with young people these days - they want to run before thay can crawl.

  • OG: I hope you're feeling better today. Terrible that you have another cold. :-(

I'll be back later today to catch up with everyone.

  • Morning all,

AQ : What I would give for 14c this morning. It is actually slightly warmer today at minus 0.2c at the moment but it looks colder with everything white with frost and no sunshine.

Diane : Time Cloak sounds as though it could be quite useful. We could hide Margaret Thatcher and pretend her time as PM did not exist. We could hide some football results so that Scotland won the world cup. It has all sorts of useful possibilities.

Lynette : Thanks for the peregrine pic at Derby and the Sanibel island ospreys.

Thanks to everyone else for the chat etc.

Yesterday we went to Dobbies for a wander around but it was all a bit depressing with all the C****** stuff still around at half price. There were still some people making purchases but I find it all a bit sad. Came home and watched some of the footie. Dundee won 3 - 0 and they played well so that was very pleasing. Also the 'other lot' Dundee United got beat so it was a double whammy. Not going to venture out today as Lady P seems to have caught my cold.

  • Spanish Sparrow update:

  • Good Morning.   White over again, here, and very cold feeling.

Thanks to Diane for starting us off again, and for the wonderful news that now I can cloak the years when I found it impossible to please the teachers in school, I can forget all those wet holidays we had in Cornwall and Devon in the 1980's, and get my teeth back to what they were in 1969.......

  • Morning All. Blue skies, sun and very cold here for at least the third day in a row (possibly more, but I can't remember days at work).  I am looking forward to cloaking the time I spend on the computer from my OH.  Lovely to read all your news, although I haven't been posting much lately.  I noticed someone mentioned auntie recently, have we heard from her?

Yesterday I went to a study day on Schumann's 3rd symphony. The trombones only play in the 4th and 5th movements so I signed up for flute too for the first three, but there were five flutes so I didn't bother swapping about - we played the double bass part instead.  The pizzicato was particularly good.  Next week is Shostakovich!

OH is getting on with sorting out some of his mum's stuff and I should really be doing the same with mine, which has been here for nearly five years now.  I think I'm fairly safe in getting rid of bills etc now but we really need to do something with all the bits of furniture which have nowhere proper to live.

One of our cats, Willow, disappeared after tea on Thursday and we haven't seen him since, no clue as to what has happened.  We have looked around the garden and next door and the field, also along the verges, but no sign.  It has been freezing at night and he never fails to come back at night, in fact he rarely goes off our land, so we think that's probably it.  Will ask at the vet's and local petshop though, on Monday.

  • Another lovely sunny and frosty day.  I slept well last night, so feel much better, and, although the cold is still with me, it’s nowhere near as bad as was the ‘flu in December.  J has gone to morning service.  OH will go with him this evening, but I shan’t venture out today.  Currently, oven and steam-oven are cooking lunch.

Diane – thanks for starting our week.  I’m not overjoyed by either piece of news!  Thanks for comment about this new virus – doesn’t feel like this will hang on very long – and I really did rest a lot yesterday!

AQ – maybe young people always wanted to “run before they could walk” – can’t remember that far back!

Alan – the (independent) Garden Centre we went to last week had fully disposed of Ch******* - but that was probably because of their alterations.  Glad Dundee made you feel happier – but sorry about Lady P’s cold.

Linda – are you rushing about again today?!

Terry – still nothing from Auntie since before festive season.  That sounds like fun – pizzicato on the trombone?  Hmmm.  Difficult to get rid of things once they take up residence – even when there isn’t really room for them – and that's apart from the emotional effort.  Sorry Willow has gone missing – I hope you get news - even if it’s not good news, it's always best to know.

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Thanks, OG, yes, it's the not knowing that is hard. We have many years' experience of knowing cats have died or been run over, and it's good if they are all together at the bottom of the garden forever.

  • Morning all:  Gone most of yesterday at Rose Garden pruning, then out to a little concert last night with just enough time in between to hose myself down!  Off to see daughter now; back this p.m. and really hope to catch up. Phew!  What a busy week that was.
