Rachel R said: Quick query for those who know Rutland: can anyone recommend a good place for lunch in the vicinity of the reserves? And does anyone know when the osprey centre opens? I can't find anything but opening hours on the website, but sure someone mentioned recently that the centre is closed at present. Any other recommendations (favoured hides etc.) gratefully received! Next Friday (or even Monday) probably a bit early for returning ospreys, but you never know - we might just be lucky.

Not sure when the Lyndon centre opens for the season, Rachel, but it has to be pretty soon. The reserve is open and you can visit the hides, even if the centre is still shut. The best place to see the ospreys is, of course, in Manton Bay which means a walk to either Waderscrape or Shallow Water hides.
I should add that 5R returned on 27th March last year so you might be a tad early. If they haven't turned up when you visit RW you could visit the Egleton reserve as well where there are a further 25 hides (in addition to the 7 at Lyndon).

I think that the Wheatsheaf is the one recommended by the locals. It is the one I been to most.
It is D on the map. (5 King Edward's Way, Oakham, Edith Weston, Oakham, Leicestershire LE15 8EZ)

Epic day of migration for 09 yesterday, including a flight across the Atlantic at night. Amazing!

WOW Alan. Unbelievable that he had headed out into the Atlantic and very lucky to have changed course. As it said on their blog, it could have been bad weather that pushed him out into the Ocean. Glad he landed safe.
If nothing goes right, go left! :-)
He still had to fly for a whole night.

There has been a lot of bad weather with storms in the Sahara also moderate easterly winds which is making this migration difficult for many ospreys.
Slow progress for 09:
www.ospreys.org.uk/.../osprey-team-blog
Tim was mentioning slow progress as he would be tired.
It may be that he is encountering sand storms now he has moved a little inland.
As you know I was in the saharah during autumn migration at an oasis (Accomodation for a remote BP Gas Plant) where the migratory birds all roosted overnight.
One morning I watched an Osprey take off probably after overnight roost and hit an isolated sand storm which brought it staright back to the ground in rapid speed.
This apears consistant with what Tim is trying to explain.
