NEWS FROM OTHER NESTS - 2012

Dunedin male:

  • I think you're right, Scylla. I remember ages ago there were three females there in a week. The first one who wouldn't let him mate was named Piret, they've just kept the name I think.

A thing of beauty is a joy forever.

With all these posts relating to the one nest is it worth starting a thread for this nest, otherwise posts relating to other nests will get lost. What are others thoughts?

The many different nest updates being posted in this thread can make it confusing to follow any particular pair. I wondered a few days ago if a split into a thread for "Other UK nests" and one for "Nests outside UK" might be a useful move. Any thoughts?

  • I agree with you AG that it's difficult to follow. I would be quite happy to have an Estonian thread, but don't want to start one unless we have a consensus.

I would be grateful for a UK/ other countries split. Much as I would like to, I don't have time to keep track of more than the UK population, and updates from the other UK nests are getting swamped on this thread at the moment. I've been thinking about this for a while now, but didn't want to rock the boat as so many of the regulars are following the Estonian nest in particular. Thanks for speaking up, Vespa!

While we're on the subject: we've had a few posts on this thread recently re species other than ospreys. I would have thought the peregrines etc. were more appropriate to Weekly Chat, and keep this just for ospreys. What does anyone else think?

  • Rachel  the pergegrine threads are to be found on Wildlife on The Web

Rach - you just prompted me to look at the Nottingham peregrines.  Lovely to see the chick being fed.  The Derby peregrines now have three chicks hatched - the third this morning.

Ruthie   There are now decidcated threads for varios peregrine nests. See    wildlife on the web

There was a Daily Mail article on the Norwich peregrines a few days ago.

  • You got there before  me Tiger. I shouldhave known

  • Trying to remember what I've just read  from various posters.

    Agree this  thread Ospreys only

Agree it might be good to have UK Ospreys and Other Osprey nests separate which would make the nests easier to follow.

  • Glaslyn update:

"After the storms of last weekend, the male Osprey has been bringing in more branches to repair the nest and the female is not letting him incubate for long – perhaps an indication that hatching will be soon. On one occasion the male brought in a very large salmon, so big that the female sat by the remains on the side of the nest completely sated!

It has now been confirmed that one of the pair’s young from 2008 (YC) is definitely one of the Ospreys sighted fishing in the area and hopes are high that he has chosen to reside in the Valley too."

  • Excellent news from Glaslyn, ALAN.

1st egg laid 4th April, so the hatching window opens tomorrow (35 days). All being well, we should have the first bobblehead of 2012 by the end of the week.
