Hi all:
Lindybird: I responded to your post at the end of the last Weekly Chat.
Merse = Flat land by a river, especially on the Solway Firth. Also used to describe land on the East side of Scotland in Berwickshire lying between the Lammermuirs (a range of hills) and the Tweed.
Have come to the conclusion that this site is a real learning curve for us all as there is always someone who has an answer!
OG: What's the link with Dundee and journalism?
Annette: OG is no longer online, so I'll give a short answer (hope that's not rude). Dundee is the headquarters of D. C. Thomson & Co., a major global publisher and printer -- millions of newspapers, magazines, and comics each year. Other publishers are there, too, I think. I know about Dundee because it has become a MAJOR center for research, development, and education -- life sciences, biotech, information technology etc. OG can tell you more, I'm sure.
Diane: Thanks. That's interesting about Dundee - but isn't your journalism background in medical/biotech research? As people on the blog point out frequently, this is such a good place to learn all kinds of things..... and I thought Dundee was all about cake and marmalade! The other thing I keep noticing (about my own posts) is my extravagant use of exclamation marks - we were only allowed maybe, just maybe, one per issue in our magazine, so I think I've got about a 30-year backlog of exclamation marks fighting to get out. :-)
Good Day Everyone!
You people and your leaf blowers! lol! I dreamt the other night that I owned a push lawn sweeper and some people had gotten in to my garage, attached excercise bands to it and were using it to work out on. I don't own a lawn sweeper or have a garage either. How's that for strange? =O)
Margaret J: Thanks so much for the link to Scotland photos. They are totally beautiful.
Annette: I did catch Raptor Force on Monday afternoon and really enjoyed watching it again, even though the bouncing camera on the bird's backs made me motion sick. BTW, the falcons nesting at the power station, not the wild birds on the bluffs, are Belinda and Brent, the pair at the King Plant in Oak Park Heights, MN and they're pictured below. (That same plant also has the XCel Energy Osprey nest and webcam.) Bob Anderson and the Raptor Resource Project do a marvelous job with the 5 types of raptors they provide nesting habitat for. I could just prattle on about raptors all day...........
Have a good day/night!
Annette: I just happened to know about D. C. Thomson. I've never worked for anyone in Dundee, but I knew about their science/tech boom. My last regular job was as an editor and a writer in oncology clinical research. I do freelance work in several fields, for anyone who will pay well and on time! Oh, and I love exclamation marks!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey, Annette! Are you still up? The New Forest stag is pawing the ground and roaring up a storm right now!!! http://www.newforestgateway.org/Wildcam/LiveCameras/tabid/117/Default.aspx
Diane: Aaack! Where? It's 10:30 California time and 6:30 according the NF clock and the time you posted your message to me. But no stag - all I can see is a blurry black and white picture of an empty glade. No sound of stag either. Where did he go!?
I am going to have to make web bird watching my new full time job! Who knew the Penguins are returning to Antarctica and they have their own webcams? Here's the website:

Caerann: Yes, I saw Belinda on the Raptor Force program where she's sitting with her chicks. Was that Bob Anderson at her nest? What! A penguin cam? Off I go to check it out!
