Weekly Chat, Sunday October 4, 2009

Another week folks. Just in case you missed it, AQ posted the following at 12:41 a.m. Sunday morning:

Good morning. 10.10 am. Yawn. Couldn’t get to sleep last night plus we lost an hour as daylight saving started. Tiring but such an exciting day yesterday watching Daughter#2 look at 100s and try on dozens of wedding dresses. Funny (strange funny), that she wants me involved. For my wedding I was busy fending off my mother as, being the last of the flock to marry, she had developed a set of traditions/customs that were essential. Hm, I won some, lost some. As Dau#2 has been living away from home for several years, I am quite happy to sit back and let her decide her day.

Annette. Until you learn the new appliances are you eating out of a can beside a campfire in the backyard? Or on a diet of salads? LOL

Diane. Later I shall post some photos of Pacific black ducks on the Backyard gallery. Loved the Kakapo video – thanks for the link.

  • Cirrus: I do really like the New Scientist magazine online and find the articles interesting and really thought provoking. But I don't always approve of the methods or the interpretations of the findings for the wildlife studies (or the elitist tone that underlies some of today's science). :-)

  • Evening all: 9:55 p.m. in California and they're forecasting the first rain of the season next week. Here's hoping it's sustained but gentle so our burned-out hillsides won't slide and create even more problems.

Good to know that nothing dramatic has been happening osprey-wise in the last few days, but seems like Alan's lesser-spotted leafblowers are finally on the move!

Caerann:  Have been to Hearst Castle several times over the years, so gave it a miss this time.  And I agree, moonstones are lovely - very delicate.

Alan: 11 grandchildren?  Geez; hope you don't have to take a loan out against the house to finance Christmas!

Auntie: Boo on night shift - never done it but can't imagine it's anything I'd like.

Cirrus: Hope your friend Brenda enjoyed her day - and the movie.

Lindybird: Where did you go on your trip? Sounds like dog-now-back-on-a-diet had a good time too!  Oh how I envy people who have the energy to do Christmas shopping in January!  My thing is buying funny greetings cards when I see them and then forgetting about them until after the birthday/anniversary in questionhas passed.

Tish: Muir burning, eh?  How does that relate, if at all, to John Muir - is it a common surname or did "muir" get named after him?  :-)

Saw more deer under our balcony this morning before we left Cambria and, unfortunately, two dead deer by the side of the road on the way home. They are all over the hills right now and just dash out across the highways. Came home to hear that hubby was in the garage the other evening refilling the cat's dry food when a skunk came tootling in and proceeded to explore all the nooks and crannies before going on its way. Last year, we - and the cat, who was outside - watched a skunk investigate the cat's dry food. Cat did not bat an eye.

Diane/AQ: About to topple into bed Will try to post some photos in the next couple of days and catch up with recent links posted here. Hope you guys are doing okay  - and everyone else too!

  • Paid a visit to Vane Farm yesterday to see the pink foot geese there was thousands flying over the loch and feeding in the fields around the loch. The weather was really autumnal clear skies a nip in the air and a slight wind blowing. there was also a few greenshanks about around the edges. A perfect way to spend a few hours.

  • Normal 0 false false false

AQ – just delighted myself by a look at your garden birdies myself.  :)  Somewhat alarmed about the drought conditions though. The wildlife !!   How do sheep farmers manage ?  (don’t think I want to know)

Caerann – Had a good look at moonstones now. Didn’t know they could be so pretty – but opals still my preference of the two (fire opals that is). I have a stunning pair of opal earrings that family bought me for my last birthday. They are full of colour. Mainly greens and blues but there is also pink.

Annette, thanks. Brenda couldn’t follow Enemy of the State – it was too fast paced for her and too many ‘story shots’ of different situations to be woven together into the actually story for her to follow. So, we abandoned that in favour of Executive Decision which she did enjoy. But it certainly gave me a very grave pause for thought. Will have to be very careful now about the movies I choose for us. And it just makes me so sad – my friend is just not the same.  Sorry about the dead dear but hope that helps raptors in the Cambrian region.

Oh,  George G -  pink footed geese in their thousands ! I have a big lump in my throat as I try to picture that. Well, that certainly means a visit to WWT Slimbridge very soon and I’ll take Brenda with me.

Tish – no, I haven’t seen Soosin – hope she’s just busy and is OK. Also, Karen and Maureen. No sign of them either   :)   Hello Soosin, Karen and Maureen if you look in .

  • Sounds like a good day george g. It was quite nice here yesterday but today it is cloudy.

Temp at 06:00 was 4.4c. It has now struggled up to 8.7c. Wind E 6mph , Vis 30kms , Temp 1020 hPa falling.

  • what a nice day that sounds george.

Sounds like you are still on the go Annette.

Sorry about your friend Cirrus, must be hard for you.

  • Diane, I must ask, how did you live "on" a duck pond LOLOL

My sister in law is trying to encourage ducks to her ponds at the same time as keeping the local foxes away!

  • Woodpecker on nuts and birdie on  hippo    !    :)

Red squirrels on the feeders one looks really auburn and what is a hippo?? LOL

Everything in life is speaking in spite of its apparent silence.

  • Gary: You need a really, really tall pair of Wellies!!! Ha!

I will need those Wellies today! We have flooding in Indiana!!! Some areas are getting 6-7 inches of rain. 41 counties are under severe weather warnings or watches. Rivers and creeks/burns are all way up. Aquilareen and Wattle: I wish I could send you some of this rain.

    Welcome back, Annette!
