Weekly Chat, Sunday October 4, 2009

Another week folks. Just in case you missed it, AQ posted the following at 12:41 a.m. Sunday morning:

Good morning. 10.10 am. Yawn. Couldn’t get to sleep last night plus we lost an hour as daylight saving started. Tiring but such an exciting day yesterday watching Daughter#2 look at 100s and try on dozens of wedding dresses. Funny (strange funny), that she wants me involved. For my wedding I was busy fending off my mother as, being the last of the flock to marry, she had developed a set of traditions/customs that were essential. Hm, I won some, lost some. As Dau#2 has been living away from home for several years, I am quite happy to sit back and let her decide her day.

Annette. Until you learn the new appliances are you eating out of a can beside a campfire in the backyard? Or on a diet of salads? LOL

Diane. Later I shall post some photos of Pacific black ducks on the Backyard gallery. Loved the Kakapo video – thanks for the link.

  • Gee whiz. You people are still with Saturday. And here am I thinking that Sunday is winding down. No wonder we get jet lag and/or confused when travelling. Thanks, girls, for the advice to remain plump and lazy <grin> Let the weeds grow and ignore t-rolls. Hooray. Yes, Annette, if you depart before I blather on again, do have a safe, relaxing & enjoyable trip with your daughter.

  • Morning all. 8.40 am here and relatively warm 10C, rain just stopped and sunbeams makes the autumn coloured leaves shine like jewerly.

  • Afternoon everyone,

This morning I spent at a Car Boot Sale at Huntingdon Garden & Leisure garden centre. I dont particularly like CBS's but Lady P does so we spent some time looking at other peoples junk.

I have taken Thunderdog Hamish out for his afternoon walk so I can relax for the rest of the day.

    Weather on TI is:

    Sunny , Temp 14.1c , Wind W 13mph , Visibilty 50kms , Barometer 1011hPa rising.

    Dew point 3.5c , Wet bulb 10.3c , Humidity 43%

  • Morning all. 8 a.m. in Californa.

Auntie: Sun plus shower plus autumn color sounds very pretty.

Alan: We call CBS garage sales here. People spread their junk (which usually looks just like our junk) around their driveways, put up signs around the neighborhood and maybe an ad in the paper or on Craigslist and wait for customers. Sometimes whole neighborhoods/streets combine to do a group sale, and sometimes there's some really nice junk!  Have a nice rest of the day.

Hubby will go on grocery shopping mission this morning since I'm going to wash everything that isn't nailed down in between wielding the vacuum cleaner.

  • What busy people we have on this blog - I just about fall out of bed, then wake up (sometimes), have breakfast, wake up if I hadn't already ... ... do very little except cook and eat ... ... then start winding down ready for the next night!

But this afternoon, we have been down to the estuary to see what was about - not a lot of activity (must check tide times next time we go!) but the usual sound of oystercatchers and then some silly fool drivng a 4X4 utility vehicle on the sand/mudflats.  Never know whether to alert coastguard before thereis a disaster or wait 'till they sink!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Hi OG: I like your schedule!  Re the silly fool on the mudflats; we had a case some years back (maybe the same silly fool?) who drove his big macho truck down the beach about 1 a.m. (illegal at any time) and got stuck in the sand at water's edge. He got out, the tide came in, bye-bye truck. He made the evening news because they had to get heavy equipment to retrieve the truck, shown bobbing impotently just beyond the surf. In addition to polite police and salvage folks, they also interviewed the silly fool  - who just couldn't understand why it all happened.......         What was that about survival of the fittest?

  • Why oh why do people disturb the serenity of the forests and the beaches -- and the wildlife -- with all of those all-terrain vehicles!? I say that we save the kakapo parrots and let the "silly fool" drivers of those vehicles go extinct. Neither is a very strong candidate for successful evolution, but the parrots are a heck of a lot cuter. ;-)

  • On a vote between ATV-types and kakapos, I'll support the latter. (However, even though certain grandsons have exhibited "silly fool" behavior at various times, we still have hopes....)

  • Woops, very sorry Annette! Didn't mean to insult the grandsons. :-O

We have a neighbor kid who is about 15 years old. He rides his ATV back and forth, back and forth through the woods next to our house at all hours of the day and night. He drives like a bat out of hell and scares the crap out of the pileated woodpeckers, deer, and other wildlife, not to mention driving me to distraction with the noise. Not part of my land, so I can't do anything about it. The kid needs a time out!!! That's why I mouthed off.

I hope you have a wonderful trip with your daughter. That is so great that you get to spend some quality time with her. Enjoy it!!! Be safe.

  • Diane:  Oh, no insult taken! Was in the store yesterday and heard a voice that sounded just like my grandson - then another; then another. Looked around and saw four teenage boys, any of whom could've been my grandson! All big, awkward, and more than a little clueless, not to mention terminally inarticulate - On the other side, you have giggling teenage girls!   it's just a phase, thank heavens. And, of course, we were never like that, right? :-)

But really, re your neighbor - any chance at all you could approach the parents?  No noise ordinances? Ugh.
