The Osprey Chat Thread for September 2011

In response to the demand for an osprey chat thread I am now making one for September 2011.  I guess there will be quite a bit to chat about given the success of the extension thread.

Absolutely AMAZING Tiger.  Here is the other one also listed as 'in the Cairngorm National Park':

What/where was the one of Odin earlier?

Yes that is EJ. There are a few others of EJ too. One with her carrying a fish.

  • Thanks to all for the links to the various photographs of EJ, I was thoroughly enjoying looking through these wonderful and marvellous photographs, and there is no doubt that they are that, until I got to the one of the Cherry Picker and saw how close the photographer was to the Osprey's nest, now I dont want to be in anyway controversial or spoil anyones enjoyment of these marvellous photographs, but surely this is not right as I believed that Ospreys were protected not only from egg robbers and men with guns, but also from photographers.   I don't want to speak out of turn here and cause any debate or anything like that, but I believe that there was an incident where a photographer was charged and fined for being too close to the nest which was causing distress to the Osprey's.

It is wonderful to see close up photographs of these marvellous birds, but I would rather that it was done through specialist photographic equipment and long lenses and from a hide, than it being a wonderful photograph because the photographer had been so close to the nest.   I am sure that most of his photographs were taken from a hide but I just thought that the cherry picker photograph/incident was surely illegal.     Please forgive me for speaking out but I just felt I had to say something, and dont want to get into any arguments over this with anyone.     On a lighter note I don't think I would like to be sitting in my home and all of a sudden there was this bright yellow thing propelled into the sky with a hood on it, to peer into my windows!!!

  • I wonder if the picture is foreshortened and the cherry-picker is further away than it appears?  It certainly looks like an intrusive monster :o

Thank you so much for the EJ pics, TIGER, a much-needed fillip at this anxious time :-)

Let's hope we see Dulas make progress PDQ, he can't be happy flitting around that alien environment.

  • Has Leri gone too? And what about Monty?

    Dyfi Osprey Project

‎14.32 - Having spent the night roosting on the Ash Tree, Leri was last seen on the nest at 7.10am. We have not seen her since. The weather is much better today so has she gone? It may be that she is trying her luck fishing in the estuary as she got no food yesterday and there has been no sign of Monty yet today either. Unfortunately Leri's tracking data came in yesterday and we do not expect another one until Thursday

  • It is very likely that Leri has gone. She is 98 days old today and we have only seen one juvenile osprey stay longer and that was Baldrick at Loch Garten in 2004. Mind you the Glaslyn juveniles may have stayed longer this year although I have not yet done the statistics.

  • Thanks for that MOFFER - I do belive she's gone then. It's a better day all round . Here's trusting she's made a more southerly route than Dulas

  • Thanks Scylla for at least commenting on my post.    Maybe it was further away than it looked in the photo, but I wonder what someone like Roy Dennis would have to say about this kind of thing, surely using a Cherry Picker to get a photograph of any kind of bird let alone an Osprey isnt right.

    Anyway will say no more!!!

  • Thanks Moffer for the update from DYFI, I do hope Dulas is OK, it certainly has me on tender hooks waiting on the GE reports coming in, can't wait to hear an update on Tore and Bynack too, it seems to be forever since the last one even if it is just a week.

  • I've seen on one of the threads that Tore and Bynack are exactly as they were :o  Little devils :-*
