Hi All:
jsb: At the end of the previous Weekly Chat are two responses to your posting about the birds with French accents. One is from me and not especially profound. The other is from Diane, and reads as follows : Lovely article. I always have two pairs of house wrens (known as jenny wrens here) who return about the same time in the spring. Even though both females are house wrens, I can always tell which bird is singing, no matter where they are. I don't know whether the slight difference is because they winter in different regions or because individual wrens have distinct sounds. I always put up houses for them, but, this year, one pair decided that it would be more fun to nest in the nook above my propane gas tank, where the dials and controls are. So I had to fiercely guard the nest from the gas company employees who periodically check the gas levels. The gas company guys think I'm looney but they didn't dare to defy me and bother the wrens!
Everyone: AQ posted this one: Adelaide 10.50 am 12 C. Pumpkin soup for lunch thanks to friend giving me 2 large butternuts. Today is the Bay to Birdwood Classic for cars 1956-1977. Once upon a time they left from Glenelg (the Bay), but lack of space means they now leave from West Beach (2 km north). They travel about 70 km (44 miles) to Birdwood in the Adelaide Hills where there is a Motor Museum. Next year is the run for the Vintage cars (pre-1956). A picnic day. A bit chilly today but not as chilly as Wattle's.
And Teresa had this tip: If you delete something by mistake it is worth holding the Ctrl key down and clicking on Z. In lots of instances it undoes your last action - not always though but still worth a try.
AQ and Teresa: Hope it was okay to copy and paste your comments on this page - didn't want anyone to miss them.

I OOps my mistake !!!
Everything in life is speaking in spite of its apparent silence.
Teresa, as you will see from above, I was asking about the black squirrel. Since then I have been reading all about them and how they greatly reduced the numbers of the reds in America. There are different stories of how they came to this country but the most popular seems to be that the original blacks were zoo escapees and also that grey squirrels can give birth to black ones. I guess the last theory could be why we see one in our garden in E. Sussex. Anyhow thanks for your answer to Alan.
Late hallo folks.
Auntie: A nest of White Anglo-Saxon Protestants! :-)))
Caerann: Same here re the Ken Burns - another three nights of it I believe.
AQ: My husband has read most of those books; he shoulda been a history prof. I keep asking him "How do they keep discovering enough to write yet another book on........" We're both library/used book store fans. We have a wonderful store in Santa Barbara called Chaucer's. It's small, private, has all the latest (and best) books and offers no discounts but is such a local institution that it seems to be surviving okay in the face of Amazon et al.
George: Is that Last Chance program focused on the UK or global? If it's the latter, we'll probably get a chance to see it here at some point.
Alan: Sounds like a lovely peaceful morning. Never heard of black squirrels though....

I hadn't seen your message Sorry. I've not got much spare time lately so have just been skimming through the messages to keep up to date with our ospreys.
Use whatever talent you possess: the woods would be very silent if no birds sang except those that sing the best.- Henry Van ***

I have been flicking through the galleries. There are some really super photos there. What a clever lot you all are. And also going through the forums it is so interesting what you find out. It really is an informative website. Nice to have time to browse.
Know what you mean Tish. I'm still exploring them and coming across new things. :)
It's great about Rothers isn't it.
10 p.m. in California. Just watched another two wonderful hours about the founding of our national parks. As the Los Angeles TImes wrote: "For Californians, Ken Burns' gorgeous and exhaustive six-part documentary on the National Parks poses something of a dilemma. In the 12 hours it takes for "The National Parks: America's Best Idea" to unfold, an Angeleno could easily visit any of a half dozen national parks. Without traffic, you could conceivably get to Yosemite, where it all started, tour the valley floor and be back before narrator Peter Coyote stopped talking...."
Night all. :-)

BUT they have upset a lot of people in Scotland with their deer culling policy proposal as follows
We see no justification for a close season for male deer and believe that an effective statutory deer management planning system would provide adequate safeguards against potential over-exploitation of male deer. Removal of the male deer season would also allow for greater flexibility of deer management without the need for authorisations (e.g. the ability to cull males in the winter if they are causing damage to habitats)."
This means that they would allow deer shooting on their lands all year round

Annette the programme goes to different countries and pick specific animals that are loosing their habitat mainly through logging.
