Fishing...

When can we tell if Bynack and Tore have started fishing??

  • That's not an easy one, Dickie-- I think there are some who believe they don't even take up fishing until they migrate (& are forced into it!) Another skill, and not an easy one, for them to learn.

  • As Linda said, Dickie, it's nigh on impossible to know if either of the juves have managed to catch a fish. All the local fishing spots are out of sight of the Centre so seeing one actually fishing is unlikely. In the past 3 years there has been no concrete evidence that any of the 8 juves had fished prior to leaving on migration.

  • Thanks to both Linda and Sandy

  • Dickie  As far as I am aware the last time a newly fledged osprey  Loch Garten osprey has caught a fish, before migration,  was in 2006. Yellow 8U the eldest chick that year was reported to have caught (and eaten) an 8 inch brown trout.  Not sure where she caught it.

  • Hi, Im new to these forums, so let me firstly introduce myself. Im Dave, live in Derbyshire and my first encounter with Ospreys was mid June this year when I came to Loch Garten with a friend who is a very keen ornithologist. He had kindly booked the two of us a trip to Scotland for 4 days in his quest for missing "ticks" for his sightings. The Osprey wasnt new to him, he wanted to see the Capercaille but we failed in that.

Anyway, the reason I am here is to give some input to this discussion.

Yesterday, someone posted a link which brought up a lot of small video clips from the BBC. One of them was about Ospreys fishing at an unnamed site. I heard someone on a two way radio say to Chris Packham something like "EJ is overhead and coming towards you". Anyway, the video showed an Osprey fishing, then I heard someone say " theres 3 more here". The video then showed one of the Ospreys catching a fish, and Chris explained the bird had a radio tracker so must be one of the LG birds. I think this proves the young must catch fish before they leave, since none of the tagged birds has returned to my knowledge. It must have been one of that years youngsters.

I might be totally wrong though.

I hope to return next year and watch the next generation grow up as I have done this year. Thanks to the LG staff and RSPB for providing the webcam.

As a ps, I live near enough to the southerly flight path to hopefully spot one of the migrating birds later this month. I'll post if I see one.

  • Cooky   Yes that piece of film has been discussed before and it was Chris Packham who was wrong. As I understand it that piece of film was made at the Rothiemurchus fish farm which is a favourite haunt for ospreys.

I am pretty certain that the tracked osprey you are talking about is Red 8T    Red 8T has form at Loch Garten in that he was actually EJ's mate for a short time in 2005.  However he is not now a Loch Garten osprey.   He reappeared in 2009  when Roy Dennis tagged him. There are a number of tagged male ospreys Red 8T being one and Nimrod being another.

Picture of Red 8T catching a fish.

  • Ah I see. So it was a tagged adult. Its a pity his tracks aren't on Google Earth. It would be interesting to track a fully migratory bird both ways.

Here is his latest migration. Spring 2011

He has been tracked through two migrations.

Yes but that is a different matter. Fishing is rather easy at Rutland water.

Can you remember what year it was?

I think that juves have also caught fish at Loch of The Lowes.
