Hallo all. It's a brand new week!

  • Hi, Annette. That post you just wrote is very engaging. You are a good writer. Have you thought about writing a book? (Perhaps you already have?) I'd buy it. Congrats on the near completion of the remodel. I know you've had your ups and downs with it, but it does sound beautiful. I want to see pictures! I'm also looking forward to reading about "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me."

aquilareen: Some of my ancestors were a little wild and rebellious. I'm not sure I'd want to dig too deeply into my history. LOL You do wonderful work!

Lindybird: Poor little puppy dog. Doesn't some company sell little Doggie Diet Treats. :-) I liked your post regarding canned hunting. I share your opinion. Gary: Enjoy your visit! Margobird and Cirrus: Have a wonderful day.

Oh, Annette, re your last post: I think our country's brief history is also the reason that Americans, as a culture, feel invulnerable and infallible. We often don't pause to realize that the same greed, arrogance, short-sightedness, failures, and subsequent tragedies that have befallen other societies can happen to us, too. Gives us a sort of political immaturity, I'm afraid, along with the good attributes.

Have been running errands all day and I'm pooped, so I'm turning in. I can't wait to see where Rothes goes next. You would think, Annette, that she and Mallachie might meet up, given that genes are partially driving them both.

  • Just home from a lovely afternoon drive in the Adelaide Hills looking for cemetery locations for husband’s webpage. Everything was so green & lush; all the dams in the gullies were filled. Such a strange sight, I felt like photographing it all. LOL

Wattle. I am happy to toss some ideas your way or do a few lookups to help find your lost g-f. My webpage is www.ach.familyhistorysa.info. You can contact me via it. Maureen.

Annette. There is a connection between South Australia and California. I found a report that 588 men left Adelaide for your goldfields in the first 3 months of 1850, with more ships ready to sail.

Diane. The more rebellious the ancestors were, the better the story. That is, provided it is far enough back in the past! SA was never a convict colony, but other states were and many people are delighted to have a convict in their family tree.

  • Our papers are getting us ready for the arrival of 2 pandas at Adelaide Zoo on loan from China. They’ve spent $8 million on a posh enclosure. Also chopped mature trees down in adjoining Botanic Park to make way for . . . a car park! I wonder what the homeless think. Will all those tourist dollars flow into new housing? I don’t feel comfortable about animals in cages. OK they are not cages but big enclosures nowadays, and these pandas are part of a global conservation breeding program. But I like to see my wildlife free. When Daughter #2 kept goldfish, I felt sorry for the poor things swimming round and round and round! I have not visited our zoo since our girls were young. Maybe I should go before the price rises for the pandas.

  • Thanks Caerann for the heads up! What an incredible number of birds all on the move. Such a spectacular sight. Don't worry I have my eyes peeled here and will let you know when I spot an osprey:) The peregrine cam sounds lovely as well, will check that out a bit later

Have a good Saturday everyone. Good to hear the news from "down  under" Funny about the city folks being worried about the dust when they are the ones suddenly breathing it! LOL

Sounds like you are nearly there with the re-modeling Annette, congrats.

  • AQ, I am not a great one for Zoo's. Haven't been to one in ages but I can cope with wildlife parks most of the time.

  • Afternoon from TI:

    Weather report :

    Low-level cloud , Temp 16.1c , Wind WNW 8 mph , Visibility 27 kms , Barometer 1026 hPa falling

    Dew point 8.9c , Wet bulb 13.3c , Humidity 55%.

Shopping mission completed ok. Dog walked successfully. Time to relax.

  • Annette, Diane & Gary:

Are you tuning in to Ken Burns National Parks series on PBS tomorrow (Sunday) night? I have always wanted to and hopefully will visit the Grand Tetons someday.  So beautiful!

For our friends outside the U.S. there is an online 25 minute preview to watch here in case you're interested:

    Cheers!

  • Did you know that apparently conkers keep spiders away?  If you place one in each room it deters spiders. We are about to test this as this morning we collected some conkers while doing the shopping task. So armed with a bag of conkers I am about to place one in each room. Where I am supposed to place them I have no idea. I guess it is just trial and error.

For those of you interested in this years world conker championships see this link:

  • I have heard that as well Alan. No idea if it works.

Has Hamish ever demanded 2 blankets, save dragging only one in and out the house???? (no idea why I thought that while doing the horses today!) LOL

Thanks Caerann , I'll record that.

  • How sad am I. Just checked out the conker website Alan, and it is very serious.

Lots of rules and regulations. Did you know you can't bring your own conker?

My favourite rule is this one for some reason... " A distance of no less than 8" or 20cm of lace must be between knuckle and nut." !!!
